Exclusive – Warnock targeting striker in January to boost Crystal Palace’s safety hopes

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has told talkSPORT he will look to add to his strike force in the January transfer window in a bid to boost the Eagles’ Premier League survival chances.

The battling London outfit have proved to be a tough nut to crack so far this season but, despite big wins over Liverpool and Everton, they sit just one point clear of the bottom three as they approach a busy festive period.

Palace were unlucky not to also come away from White Hart Lane with a deserved three points, as they were left to rue a handful of wasted chances in a 0-0 draw with Tottenham.

And it’s that lack of clinical touch in front of goal the manager is keen to address in the new year.

“No disrespect to our strikers, but we haven’t got that one top goalscorer some of the other bottom teams have,” Warnock told the Season Ticket.

“When we played Aston Villa [a 1-0 home defeat for Palace], I thought we battered them on the pitch but Christian Benteke was the difference, it was a fantastic strike for his goal.

“And at Swansea, Wilfried Bony did really well against us even though we came away with a point [a 1-1 draw at the Liberty Stadium].

“We haven’t got one of those players at the moment, but that’s what we’re looking for.

“The teams that have those players are the ones who will survive, so we do need to find an answer to that and hopefully in January we can pull something out of the hat.”

Many questioned the Eagles’ future in the Premier League after Tony Pulis, who enjoyed great success during his short spell at the club, left his post as manager before the start of the new campaign.

The Welshman was named manager of the season after steering Palace clear of relegation for the first time in their history, and asked if he is confident his side have enough quality to consolidate their top flight status, Warnock added:  “Yes I am.

“I think there are ten clubs who will fight it out at the end of the season, but I feel we can do it.”
