Van Gaal makes shock claim: Man United DON'T need new defenders

Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United don’t need to bring in defensive reinforcements in January

Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United don’t need to bring in defensive reinforcements in January.

Pundits up and down the country have been highlighting their problems at the back since the start of the season, with a mixture of injuries and inexperience undermining their undoubted attacking threat.

Chris Smalling joined the ranks of the walking wounded on Monday night when he limped out of the victory at Southampton with a groin problem, while youngster Paddy McNair was hauled off before half-time following a difficult start to the game at St Mary’s.

And having lost the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra in the summer, it was expected the Dutchman would target tough, experienced defenders when the transfer window opens in the New Year.

But he claims he has "more than enough" in the current Old Trafford ranks.

"When you have injuries you cannot solve the problem otherwise," said Van Gaal. "Do we have to buy players? No. We have more than enough."
