Manchester City’s superstars delayed return from the World Cup was to blame for the Citizens slow start to the season, Gary Owen has told talkSPORT.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men have found form in recent weeks but their slow start to the season has left them six points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
The former City midfielder believes the Blues should have followed Bayern Munich’s blueprint and their failure to do so could cost them dear come May.
“I think our season was disrupted right at the start of the season because our players at the World Cup didn’t return until early August,” Owen told the Sports Bar.
“I understand that some players need a rest but the guys who won the World Cup for Germany were back training at Bayern Munich almost immediately and i thought they did it the right way.
“I think we suffered because of that, because we didn’t, or we couldn’t, play our first eleven from the start of the season and we had to get them fit, but they are certainly fit now."
