Chelsea continued their fine start to the season with a formidable 6-0 mauling of Maribor in the Champions League earlier this week, but they should be in for a sterner challenge from this weekend’s Premier League opponents.
Manchester United are a shadow of the team that once ruled English football, but they are still able to pose a threat at Old Trafford to the Blues’ unbeaten run.
Such is the swagger and dominance Chelsea have displayed so far this campaign, the Blues are probably fabvourites despite playing away from home, but boss Jose Mourinho will head into Sunday’s clash with something of a striking issue.
Reports of Diego Costa’s continued struggle with a hamstring problem remains an area of concern, and that has been followed by revelations that the Spanish hitman had been admitted to hospital with a ‘severe stomach bug’, following the international break.
It therefore seems highly unlikely that the will make an appearance at the weekend, although Mourinho’s tendency to play his cards very close to his chest in regards to his players, means that there is always a chance Costa could make a surprise return.
The other serious concern surrounds his deputy and Blues’ back-up striker Loic Remy. The Frenchman started Wednesday’s victory over Maribor, but was withdrawn with a groin complaint, leading Mourinho to immediately rule him out of action for the rest of the week.
However, Remy’s comments that he’ll be ready for the trip to Manchester has perhaps thrown his manager’s preparations into doubt, with initial suggestions that Didier Drogba could be handed a rare start.
The veteran striker scored his first goal for the club since returning to Stamford Bridge this summer, and he has warned Man United that he is ‘feeling lucky’.
One thing is for certain though and that is that the Blues will be without Cesar Azpilicueta, who is suspended this weekend following his dismissal against Crystal Palace.
