Messages of condolence continued to flood in on Monday following the killing of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.
The rising national team captain was shot dead on Sunday while trying to protect his girlfriend in a reported housebreak and robbery. Pirates confirmed the news in a statement released earlier on Monday.
The Orlando Pirates Football Club ?family has learned with sadness about the untimely death of our number one goalkeeper and current captain Senzo Meyiwa.
“This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it - to Senzo’s family, to his extended family, to Orlando Pirates and to the nation”, commented club chairman Dr Khoza.
This statement is being issued whilst Orlando Pirates officials ?are up and about dealing with matters that arise when such untimely and unsettling news is received.
SA Football Association (Safa) paid tribute to Meyiwa, who was recently appointed Bafana Bafana captain. He led Bafana to a 3-0 away win against Sudan in their first 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in September. In his second match as captain, helped Bafana Bafana to a 0-0 draw against defending African champions Nigeria before leading them to a 2-0 away win against Congo and a 0-0 home draw.
“We are shocked and devastated by the tragic news of South Africa’s current number one goalkeeper and captain of Bafana Bafana. Here was a man who was an integral part of the revolution of our beloved national team under Shakes Mashaba. For him to leave is like this is shocking. As an Association we expected so much from him, the nation had pinned their hopes on him following brilliant displays in the Bafana Bafana jersey, more so in the recent Afcon matches where kept a clean sheet in all four games. We will surely miss him,” said Safa president Dr Danny Jordaan.
Tributes also came from other sporting codes with Cricket South Africa (CSA) expressing “shock of the tragic death of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain, Senzo Meyiwa, at the weekend.”
“Senzo has been an inspirational leader both of the national soccer team and of Orlando Pirates. This year he has led Bafana Bafana to the top of a tough group that also includes defending champions, Nigeria, in the qualifying rounds for the African Cup of Nations.
“On behalf of the CSA family I extend our deepest condolences to the many people who have been deeply affected by this double tragedy,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.
SA Rugby Union (SARU) alsopaid its respects to Meyiwa. Oregan Hoskins, President of SARU, said Meyiwa’s death marked a very sad day for South Africa, and sport in this country.
“The loss of any life is sad and tragic and along with the South African Football Association and everyone else in South African sport we’d like to pay our respects to Senzo today,” said Mr Hoskins.
“Our hearts go out to his family and friends, as well as his Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates team-mates on a very sad day. Senzo was still a young man and he was one of the stars in a South African soccer team on the up recently.”
Springbok captain Jean de Villiers also paid his respects to Meyiwa.
“Senzo's death is very tragic and unnecessary,” said De Villiers.
“He was one of those sportsmen who came through the ranks and worked very hard to get to the top. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and team-mates on this very sad day for South African sport.”
International sport stars also took to Twitter as they paid their respect to Meyiwa.
Born on 24 September 1987, Senzo played seven times for Bafana Bafana captaining them four times. He has conceded just one goal – scored by Australian Tim Cahill in a friendly match earlier this year (26 May 2014) in Australia. He also played in the u17, U20 and U23 national teams of South Africa.
