West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has revealed the club have been advised not to play star striker Diafra Sakho until the row over his Africa Cup of Nations exit is resolved.
Senegal reportedly complained to FIFA about the Premier League side’s actions after their frontman pulled out of the competition with a back injury but then played and scored in the Hammers’ FA Cup victory over Bristol City.
Allardyce insisted following the game that the club had done nothing wrong by allowing the summer signing – who has scored ten goals in 16 appearances in his debut season – to play.
Sakho also later spoke of his ‘sadness and anger’ after he was the subject of criticism and abuse on social media.
The striker was left out of the squad as West Ham slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday, and the manager confirmed he will not take to the field again until the situation is iron out.
"With Sakho it is down to the situation we are in with FIFA," said Allardyce.
"While it is happening it is not conducive for us to be putting him on the field until it is resolved sadly.
"If you speak to the lad you would know how angry and disappointed he is at being denied the opportunity to play football when it is not our fault.
"We have covered all the rules and regulations but at this moment in time it is sensible to do the right thing and not get involved any more - that is what I was told yesterday.”
