National First Division club Golden Arrows advanced to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after beating Absa Premiership outfit AmaZulu 2-1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Friday night.

The goals for Arrows came through Mabhudi Khenyeza and an own goal by Usuthu defender Roscoe Pietersen.

The KwaZulu-Natal derby, which featured the No 1 team in the National First Division against the last-placed club in the Premiership, saw AmaZulu being the first club to lose against a lower division club in this competition.

It was AmaZulu that showed more composure in the first five minutes, with Ayanda Dlamini taking a long shot to test the goalkeeper, but the ball went over the cross bar.

Usuthu scored early when Goodman Dlamini found the foot of Bornwell Mwape who calmly trapped the ball, turned and took a ground shot which took a deflection to give Usuthu a 1-0 lead.

Sibeko nearly equalised for Arrows in the 32nd minute, but goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro made a good save on his right.

Just before the half ended Arrows got a set-piece and it was the experienced 32-year-old Khenyeza who made no mistake and scored from the free kick to help Arrows draw the teams level at 1-all going into the break.

In the second half it was Golden Arrows that came out firing, putting AmaZulu on the back foot.

Ten minutes after the second half Khenyea searched for a brace but his shot deflected wide. Just minutes after that AmaZulu keeper Murambadoro made a great save tipping the ball over.

Golden Arrows' pressure on AmaZulu finally payed off when they took the lead courtesy of Pietersen’s own goal inside the box in the 70th minute after a great cross by Deon Hotto.

After this goal AmaZulu tried to get back into the game and it was Mwape who was pushing for a second goal but Arrows held firm.

The last opportunity for AmaZulu came in extra time when Asive Langwe’s final touch went wide.

This saw Golden Arrows advancing to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup.
