Mamelodi Sundowns closed the gap on Absa Premeirship log leaders Kaizer Chiefs with a convincing 4-1 win over Moroka Swallows in a league match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday night.
The win takes the Brazilians to 34 points from 18 games, 12 points behind Chiefs while the loss for Swallows sees them on 19 points, only two points outside the relegation zone.
Sundowns came out of the gates firing and opened the scoring in the 13th minute when a Teko Modise free-kick from the right side of the box was cleverly headed home by Alje Schut from ten-yards out, 1-0.
A minute later the Brazilians found their second goal in a very similar fashion, this time Cuthbert Malajila meeting an Anthony Laffor right wing cross with a strong eight-yard header, 2-0.
In the 22nd minute Malajila completed his brace after some good work down the right flank from Siyanda Zwane saw him beat his marker and square for the Sundowns striker to side-foot home from close range, 3-0.
Teko Modise got in on the action in the 25th minute, somewhat fortuitously, when his long range free-kick stay low on the bounce to go under the arms of Swallows keeper Greg Etafia, 4-0.
Swallows, despite not being in the game, were afforded the perfect opportunity to get back in the game in the 44th minute when Mzikayise Mashaba pulled Felix Obada down inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
Luyolo Nomandela stepped up for the Birds and made no mistake from the penalty-kick, 4-1.
The second 45 saw Swallows trying to come back into the game, but the Sundowns defence weathered an early second half storm and finished the stronger of the two sides.
In the 61st minute Modise came close to finding his second on the night when a 16-yard shot struck the outside of the woodwork on a swift counter-attack.
Kudakwashe Mahachi should have made it five for the Brazilians in the 76th minute when he met an inch perfect cross from Kharma Billiat, but Greg Etafia produced a great one-on-one save.
Five minute from the end Billiat fashioned a chance for himself, but failed to take it as he fired inches wide from just inside the box.
Sundowns held on for their first win of 2015 and a comfortable one at that.
