Adel Taarabt is the latest figure from the world of football to put the boot into Mario Balotelli, having described his former AC Milan team-mate as ‘ordinary’.
You might question the Moroccan’s entitlement to offer such comment, given his own career shortcomings, but he’s not the only one to criticise Balotelli.
The Italian’s struggles this season are well publicised, but what should Liverpool do with him? Here are what the experts have said…
[He plays for himself] The quicker Brendan Rodgers see it and can get rid of him the better, to be honest, and the better it will be for everyone because there is a lack of spirit in that Liverpool side.
– Paul Ince, speaking to talkSPORT
You’ve got a guy who is not producing on the field and who’s making a mockery of the club off the field.
– Steve Nicol, speaking to talkSPORT
People think every player should be treated the same, but sometimes you have exceptional players who need a different approach to get the best out of them, and that is Mario.
– Ryan Babel, speaking to talkSPORT
For me, Balotelli looks out of place, he looks uncomfortable.
– John Aldridge, speaking to talkSPORT
His work rate on the pitch hasn’t been good enough. The one thing you must always give as a footballer is 100 per-cent.
– Roy Evans, speaking to talkSPORT
I think the Liverpool fans will get agitated with Balotelli. He’s a player who promises so much but ultimately delivers very little and that's the problem.
– Steve Clarke, speaking to talkSPORT
I'd be surprised to see him here next season. It was just a panic [buy]; they needed someone. They left it too late and they've bought different players in different positions instead of maybe going out, not spending the whole Suarez money on one player, but buying two or three big players.
I don't know whether he has any brain to make the right decision. You never watch Mario Balotelli and think 'Wow, he's put a real stint in'. There has to be something more than 'I just can't be bothered to run around'.
– Graeme Souness
He still has a future at Liverpool. The fans are some of the most patient, but he has to realise he’s playing at Liverpool Football Club, not just any other club. He’s got to show his commitment to the club by proving it on the pitch.
– Ian Rush, speaking to talkSPORT
