Manchester City were handed the toughest Champions League last-16 draw of the English clubs after being paired with Barcelona for a second successive year.
Chelsea and Arsenal managers Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger were granted their wishes by drawing Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, respectively.
Barca knocked City out of the Champions League at the same stage of the competition last season with a 4-1 aggregate victory.
This season’s tie means a return to England for former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona in the summer.
Former Barcelona player and director of football Txiki Begiristain, who holds the same position at City, said: “It is unbelievable. We don’t need to talk because every time it is the same. Bayern Munich, Roma and CSKA in the group stage and now Barcelona, who we also drew last season.
“We have plenty of confidence, though, because of beating Bayern and Roma away and we have players to recover and come back so we will arrive in a good moment.
“We have improved our squad since last season, we are more solid and stronger at the back. We have more confidence for this game.
“I will have the same emotions as last season and the same difficulties. I will try to visit family and friends.”
Chelsea manager Mourinho had claimed he wanted to draw PSG, despite the fact the French club would appear to pose a stern test for his side.
Speaking ahead of the draw, Mourinho had said: “Paris would be good as it's easy to travel for us and the fans. That would be good. But we can't decide the draw.”
Chelsea reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season before being knocked out by Atletico Madrid and Mourinho added: “Last year we were close and we didn't have the team playing at such a high level as we do this season, so we can dream we will do it.
“But let's see if the sharks let us, because there are a few sharks in the ocean. I like to swim with sharks – in a cage! I did it in French Polynesia. I didn't want to go, but my wife and my kids pushed me.”
Chelsea knocked PSG out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage last term on the away-goal rule after a 3-3 aggregate draw.
The tie will mean a return to Chelsea for the club’s former central defender David Luiz, who joined PSG for £50m in June.
Chelsea secretary David Bernard said: “No matter who we got, they are all there by merit. PSG are known to us and, of course, they have David Luiz. Jose said before the draw that he wanted PSG for the supporters and travel logistics, and he was right
“We have an advantage by being away from home first, so, from our point of view, the draw would have been the same whoever we got.
“Last season is in the past. Each match is a different scenario, so we would have taken PSG right from the start. Jose is right to keep his feet on the ground and take each competition as it comes along.”
Having drawn Bayern Munich in each of the last two seasons at the last-16 stage, Arsenal were finally handed a favourable tie against Wenger’s former club Monaco.
Wenger spent seven years as Monaco’s manager, winning both the French League and Cup in that time, as well as guiding the team to the European Cup semi-finals and the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Arsenal secretary David Miles said: “As the draw progressed, it was evident a lot of the big teams had gone. But we are just delighted to be here. We are looking forward to the games and being at the top table.
“We have picked the biggest teams in last five years, but we are taking nothing for granted. Monaco earned the right to be here, the same as we have.
“It will be the first time we have played Monaco in a competitive match, so Arsene will be delighted to go back to one of his former teams. It would be fantastic to get through, because our fans have high expectations. It is possibly an early Christmas present for us, but we are taking nothing for granted.”
