Pochettino proud of Tottenham’s spirit following comeback against Everton

Pochettino proud of Tottenham’s spirit following comeback against Everton

Mauricio Pochettino hailed Tottenham's fighting spirit as his players came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Spurs have already lost four times at home this season but goals from Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado cancelled out Kevin Mirallas' opener and ensured all three points stayed in north London.

Pochettino has previously questioned the mental toughness of his team but the Argentine was delighted with a hard-fought victory.

"Our mentality and our spirit today were fantastic," said the manager.

"This is what we want. We need to keep this feeling. It is impossible always to win but with the spirit and mentality we showed today, it will be easier to win games."

He added: "Everton have a very good squad and for us it is not only three points, it is a little bit more than three points.

"It is important to grow and build on the victory."

Spurs, who are now seventh in the table and two points off fourth spot, played with more urgency and attacking verve, which rallied the home support.

Ahead of the international break, striker Emmanuel Adebayor said Tottenham had been afraid to get on the ball during their 2-1 defeat to Stoke due to the negative atmosphere at White Hart Lane, but Pochettino believes the fans played an important part in his side's victory.

"I understand our supporters were angry because if you lose four games at home, it is impossible for the supporters to be happy," he added.

"I understand that but today the team sent a different signal to our supporters and it is important to keep this feeling and mentality for the rest of the season.

"Today wasn't easy because they scored with their first shot and after we turned the result around in the first half.

"I think it was important how our supporters helped the team."

Soldado's goal came on the brink of half-time and was his first in 593 minutes of competitive action.

The Spaniard latched onto Aaron Lennon's pass before coolly slotting the ball past Tim Howard and into the far corner.

"You need to give confidence to the player to keep working hard," Pochettino said of the former Valencia front-man.

"It has not been easy for him but you need to motivate the player - it is always frustrating for a striker who does not score.

"Today he scored and he is happy, he is more free because he feels the pressure.

"It is important for the team that the striker scores goals."

Pochettino Urges Tottenham To Keep Positive Mentality Against Chelsea

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino hopes to keep the good run in their next Premier League game against Chelsea on Wednesday after securing three crucial points in the Sunday's clash with Everton.

Following wins over Hull City and Partizan in the Europa League, Spurs managed to come from behind to secure their third consecutive victory thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado.

And with the North London side set to visit the leaders on Wednesday, Pochettino is confident of their options to take a positive result from Stamford Bridge.

"We need to keep this mentality and try to show this in the next game against Chelsea," the manager said.

"Today was a very important victory. I think that always you need time to set out your philosophy but today we can be very pleased."

"(Coming from behind) is important. It shows we have character, personality, we are brave. It was very difficult because with their first shot they score and afterwards it's never easy but we were very aggressive in our game and we showed our style."

"It was a good chance to give this present of three points to our fans. It is important to enjoy this feeling with the team.

"We need to keep this mentality and try to show the same in the next game.

"Always you need the time to set your philosophy but today we are very pleased with the three points."

Having lost four games at White Hart Lane during the first part of the campaign, Pochettino was very happy for the supporters.

"Today I showed my emotion, I was happy because I know our players suffer a lot and our supporters too," said Pochettino.

"It was a good chance to give this present of three points to our fans. It is important to enjoy this feeling with the team."

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Everton 1: Roberto Soldado strikes to break Spurs' post Europa League hoodoo

Follow

Tottenham Hotspur produced their third comeback in four Premier League games to lift two curses and there was not a member of the Adebayor clan in sight.

Emmanuel Adebayor is involved in a bizarre dispute with members of his family over whether or not they have tried to place a witch’s spell on the Spurs striker.

Adebayor was not part of the matchday squad yesterday because of a virus and, presumably, none of his family were inside White Hart Lane. But without the help of the Adebayors, Tottenham managed to beat their post-Europa League home hoodoo and Roberto Soldado finally broke his goal curse.

Adebayor had accused the Spurs supporters of being too quiet and critical after the defeat against Stoke City, but Soldado’s name rang around White Hart Lane after the striker scored his first Premier League goal since March and the £26 million signing was given a standing ovation when he was substituted with nine minutes remaining.

The message to Adebayor seemed to be “it’s not us, it’s you” and that was emphasised by the fact that the Tottenham crowd also chanted the name of the excellent Harry Kane.

Both teams had been in Europa League action in the week, with Tottenham beating Partizan Belgrade at White Hart Lane and Everton winning in Germany against Wolfsburg.

The European hangover has too often been heavy for Spurs, with Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United and Stoke City all leaving White Hart Lane with three points. Those home defeats had prompted Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach, to question the mental strength of his players, but there finally seems to be some fight in this Spurs side.

After seeing his team defeat Everton, Pochettino said: “It’s not only three points, it’s a little bit more. We broke a bad run of home results. It was important to get this victory. To win away and lose at home is not the right way. I understand why our supporters were angry. If you lose four at home, it is difficult for them to be happy. But the team have sent a different signal to our supporters. We must keep this feeling and mentality for the season.”

Tottenham fought back at Aston Villa and Hull City after their opponents had been reduced to 10 men, and Spurs had to come from behind again after Everton took a 15th-minute lead. Vlad Chiriches brought Kevin Mirallas down on the corner of the area. Leighton Baines took the free-kick that Ryan Mason headed out of danger, but Soldado did not clear the ball to safety and Mirallas scored from the edge of the area.

The mood inside White Hart Lane threatened to turn ugly once again and the defender Chiriches, who was filling in at right-back, almost gifted Everton a second with a short back pass that Romelu Lukaku raced towards but Hugo Lloris was off his line quickly to clear.

Kane had been Tottenham’s only bright spot so far this season and the forward had a large influence in Spurs pulling level against the run of play and then taking the initiative.

The England Under-21 international fizzed in a low shot that Tim Howard could only palm away and Christian Eriksen neatly placed the follow-up into the net. Pochettino’s wild celebration was no doubt inspired by relief.

Soldado had the chance to make up for his error for the Everton opener eight minutes before half-time, but, as has been the case so often in a Spurs shirt, the Spaniard did not make the most of it. Muhamed Besic’s attempted headed back pass dropped to the feet of Soldado. Rather than controlling the ball or poking it into the net, however, the striker touched it straight into the grateful hands of Howard.

However, Soldado’s moment finally came in time added on for stoppages at the end of the first half and it owed much to the hard work of Kane.

The first half looked to be drifting towards a conclusion with the scores level until Kane produced a superb tackle on Gareth Barry. Aaron Lennon picked the ball up and played in Soldado, whose cool finish beat Howard. Soldado slid to his knees and his name echoed inside White Hart Lane as the players headed down the tunnel for the break.

The goal seemed to rejuvenate Soldado, who came out for the restart with a spring in his step – dropping deep to find the ball, running at the Everton defence and spreading the play with cross-field passes.

Lukaku tried a couple of shots from distance that did not hit the target and Spurs survived a loud late penalty appeal, when the Belgian’s header appeared to strike the arm of defender Federico Fazio.

Roberto Martínez, the Everton manager, said: “Fazio makes himself really big and closes his eyes, and he’s in a unusual position when it hits him. If it hits him in the chest, no complaints, but it hits him in the arm and it should have been a penalty.”

Tottenham had worked hard for their stroke of luck and even Adebayor would not begrudge Soldado his magic moment.

Zungu, Zulu help Bafana sink Ivorians

Bafana Bafana comfortably beat Ivory Coast 2-0 in the Nelson Mandela Challenge at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday.

South Africa’s goals came from Bongani Zungu and David Zulu in a match the home side bossed.

Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard admitted Bafana Bafana's dominance after the game.

“South Africa were faster than us and better than us in every area, well done!”

South Africa started well and had the ball in the back of the net in just the second minute when Vuyisile Wana ran onto a Zungu through ball and crossed to Puleng Tlolane, who netted from close range.

The assistant referee, however, called for offside. TV replays showed that it was a tight call and the goal probably should have been given.

Then, in the eighth minute Vuyisile Wana, the Moroka Swallows live wire, cut inside from the left wing and took a long-range shot only to see the ball fly wildly over the bar.

Two minutes later Zulu and Tlolane linked up well and looked threatening, but the final touch was lacking.

In the 28th minute Wana again got into space down the left wing and created problems with his pace and power, but he decided to have a crack at goal with his left foot from a tight angle and got it horribly wrong.

But then three minutes later Bafana took the lead after several passes in and around the opponents’ danger area. Left-back Patrick Phungwayo was right up in the action and supplied the pass to Zungu, who buried his shot across goal from the right side of the 18-yard area.

Themba Zwane came close to a second goal just before halftime when he chased a long ball and almost got there but the Ivorian goalkeeper beat him to the race for the ball and snuffed out the danger.

South Africa made a change after the break, bringing Siyanda Ngubo on for Tlolane and in the 53rd minute Ngubo’s pass drew the Ivorian goalkeeper off his line and into a mistake, which allowed Zulu to score the second goal.

Chippa United striker Zulu took a first time shot with his left foot into an empty net after the goalkeeper’s error.

On 65 minutes, Bafana came close another goal when 19-year-old forward Ngubo just couldn’t get his boot onto the ball from close range following a deflected ball knocked into the danger area.

Two minutes later and it was nearly goal No 3 for the home team when Lerato Lamola beat his man and got into space but could not get enough power on his left-footed shot. He did have two open teammates to his left that he could have passed to though.

The Ivorians had a couple of chances late in the game but could not penetrate Jackson Mabokgwane in goals.

Shakes Mashaba rung the changes inside the final 20 minutes to give various players a run out and it was clear that the home side were enjoying themselves and playing with confidence.

Midfield Duo Fabian Delph and Kevin Kampl On Pochettino's Hitlist For January Window – Report

fabian delph
Fabian Delph has starred for Aston Villa and is out of contract next summer.

Tottenham are reportedly targeting Kevin Kampl and Fabian Delph for the January transfer window with Mauricio Pochettino hoping the duo will solve Spurs' recent woes on the pitch.

Tottenham are currently tenth in the table and have had a topsy turvy season so far with pressure mounting on Pochettino as they look to challenge for a Champions League place.

A win over Hull in their last fixture was a sign of improvement for a side who have gone through four managers in just over two years, and now the Mirror are reporting that the manager will beef up Spurs' midfield in the hopes of getting more consistent.

Recent big-name signings such as Paulinho, Erik Lamela, Lewis Holtby and Nacer Chadli have failed to set the Premier League on fire and both Delph and Kampl are seen as more affordable options in the lead up to the winter window.

Starring for Red Bull Salzburg, Pochettino reportedly scouted Kampl during the week in the Europa League and Tottenham could offer him a wage package that might tempt a move to the Premier League.

Meanwhile Delph is out of contract with Aston Villa at the end of next season, giving Spurs a big chance of convincing the club to sell before they run the risk of receiving nothing for their star.

Recent reports have also claimed that Pochettino is hoping to clear out the Tottenham squad in January to make way for new signings, with the likes of Kyle Naughton, Aaron Lennon and Paulinho offered exits if the right amount is handed over to White Hart Lane.

It's believed that only if these players leave will the budget Pochettino needs to make his desired purchases be possible.

Man Utd news: Angel Di Maria suffers more injury woe after limping off with hamstring problem

Follow

Angel Di Maria has suffered another injury blow at Manchester United after suffering a hamstring injury in the victory over Hull.

The Argentinian was forced to limp off early on at Old Trafford and, although he will now be assessed, Van Gaal has already ruled him out of Tuesday's clash with Stoke.

Van Gaal said: "I think Di Maria was hamstring. He knows his own body very well because at once he said he had to come off, so maybe it is not too bad.

"It is always difficult to say. We will have to wait and see. He shall be out for the match against Stoke for sure."

Captain Wayne Rooney was also limping at the final whistle after banging his knee, but Van Gaal did not believe that problem was serious. Rooney was also kicked in the first half but quickly ran off that knock.

Van Gaal said: "He had a kick on his calf I believe. He then had a kick on his knee but it was not too serious because he said he will play."

Van Gaal was also pleased to see his countryman Van Persie back on the scoresheet after a week of heavy criticism following his lacklustre display at Arsenal.

Van Gaal said: "Every striker needs a goal. When you haven't scored in the last two or three matches you need a goal.

"I am very pleased and happy for him that he scored but I am sure he can play better than he did today."

SuperSport win epic Telkom KO final

29 November 2014, 17:35
Tweet

A great individual goal from Thuso Phala in the 111th minute handed SuperSport United a 3-2 win over Platinum Stars in the final of the 2014 Telkom Knockout at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.

SuperSport started brightly and had the first decent effort on goal in the ninth minute when Dove Wome unleased a 30-yard thunderbolt, but he saw his effort superbly turned around the post by the fingertips of Siyabonga Mpontshane.

SuperSport almost scored from the resulting corner when Lebogang Manyama met a David Mathebula corner and tried to chest the ball home, but his attempt was cleared off the goalline by Eleazar Rodgers.

Stars’ first opening on goal came off a Ronwen Williams mistake in the 15th minute when the goalkeeper’s attempted clearance ricocheted off Rodgers and into the path of Robert Ng’ambi. However, his attempted chip from 30 yards out was saved by the keeper who did well to get back.

In the 21st minute SuperSport should have been awarded a penalty when Manyama was clearly brought down inside the box by Tshepo Gumede, but the referee, to everyone’s surprise, waved away the appeals.

A minute later Stars nearly took the lead when Luvolwethu Mpeta broke behind the SuperSport defence, but he fired wide form just inside the box with just the keeper to beat.

Stars did take the lead in the 29th minute when Ng’ambi was played into space inside the box by Mogakolodi Ngele, and he duly fired home from 14 yards out.

SuperSport were afforded the chance to level matters in the 35th minute when Mathebula was pulled down inside the box by Mpeta and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

SuperSport’s captain Clayton Daniels stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to draw the game level going into the halftime break.

The second 45 was not as entertaining as the first and fans only saw a few opportunities in front of goal.

In the 57th minute Ngele came close to giving his side the lead for the second time when his low grass-cutter from just inside the box struck the side-netting.

SuperSport’s best chance of the second half came in the 79th minute when Mathebula played Wome into space, but his shot was straight at the keeper who made a good save.

The game ended 1-1 and went into extra-time.

The first half of extra-time produced plenty of excitement with SuperSport winning a penalty 11 minutes in after Thuso Phala was brought down inside the box by Solomon Mathe.

Daniels stepped up and converted his second penalty of the match to give SuperSport a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes later Stars drew level with a superb goal from Ngele as his strike from the edge of the box found the bottom right corner of the net.

Stars were afforded the chance to take the lead in the dying seconds of first-half injury time when Thabo Moloi handled the ball inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Eleazar Rodgers stepped up for Stars, but saw his penalty superbly saved by Williams and again saw the keeper stop his rebound effort with the first half of extra-time ending 2-2.

The second half of extra-time saw Phala score a magnificent solo goal in the 111th minute to seal victory for SuperSport.

Phala picked up the ball on the right flank and proceeded to drive into the box, beating two defenders before curling the ball with the outside of his right boot into the corner of the net from 14 yards out.

Chelsea boss Mourinho defends feisty Costa

Chelsea boss Mourinho defends feisty Costa

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho leapt to the defence of striker Diego Costa following the Blues’ scrappy 0-0 draw at Sunderland.

The in-form hitman failed to add to his 11 goals for the season at the Stadium of Light and was fortunate to escape punishment after two contentious incidents against his stubborn Black Cats opponents.

Costa was lucky to stay on the pitch after appearing to kick out at John O'Shea in the first-half, before picking up his fifth yellow card of the season for catching fellow defender Wes Brown with a flailing arm during the stalemate.

His physical approach to the game increased as his frustration grew in the game, but asked if his feisty nature on the pitch was becoming as problem, Mourinho said: "Why do you speak all the time about Diego?

“I don't agree, I don't agree. I was just told that he was unlucky to get the yellow card.

“It was a very physical game, Sunderland were very aggressive and they frustrated my players a lot.”

His fifth booking of the season means Costa is now suspended for Wednesday night's clash with Tottenham, although Mourinho insists he will lose no sleep over the top striker’s absence.

Asked if Chelsea will miss him, he said: "No. We'll play [Loic] Remy or [Didier] Drogba. We don't cry about injured players or about suspended players.

"If he's suspended, he's suspended. He can rest, he can be fresh against Newcastle and against Tottenham, Drogba and Remy will have their opportunity to start the game. No problem, let's go."

Opposite number Gus Poyet admitted Costa could have seen red, but did not argue with referee Kevin Friend's decision to spare him.

Poyet said: "That's Diego, always on the line, close to the limit. The first one with John O'Shea, there was a little bit of a situation in there.

"But those decisions, if they go one way or the other, I would say the same here. But it's true that sometimes you give the ref the chance, and if you give the ref the chance, then it's difficult to complain.

"But I'm pleased he is going to be able to play because he's the best striker in the league and you want to see him week in, week out."

Premier League As It Happened: Sunderland 0-0 Chelsea, Liverpool 1-0 Stoke, Manchester United 3-0 Hull, West Brom 0-1 Arsenal

Robin van Persie
Robin van Persie celebrates breaking his goalless streak as Manchester United take a convincing win over Hull.
  • West Brom 0-1 Arsenal FT
  • Burnley 1-1 Aston Villa FT
  • Liverpool 1-0 Stoke FT
  • Manchester United 3-0 Hull FT
  • QPR 3-2 Leicester FT
  • Swansea 1-1 Crystal Palace FT
  • West Ham 1-0 Newcastle FT
  • Sunderland 0-0 Chelsea FT

7:21pm: And that's a wrap! A disappointing game for Chelsea, but Sunderland will be happy to not only have taken a point, but looking dangerous against the title favourites on many occasions. That's a wrap on all the Saturday Premier League action, but come back tomorrow for all the latest on Southampton v Manchester City and Tottenham v Everton. Cheers!

7:19pm: Two minutes added time - it's not much, and Chelsea have a lot of strikers on the pitch... can Sunderland do the unthinkable?

7:15pm: Sunderland almost hit the post again through Adam Johnson, they're looking more likely to score at the moment.

7:12pm: Andre Schurrle is now coming on for Willian - Mourinho is throwing everything he's got at Sunderland's defence.

7:05pm: Remy and Drogba are on for Chelsea as Mourinho looks for a late winner. Three points would give them a nine point advantage at the top of the table. Meanwhile Costa is off and safe from a possible red card.

7:01pm: Chelsea are having to protect their net as well, with Courtois saving a super shot from Connor Wickham who has been brilliant today.

6:57pm: Coming into the last 20 minutes and Chelsea need to change things up if they want to get three points out of this. They've had five shots on target but can't find a way through Pantilimon at present.

6:51pm: Sunderland are still getting in the way of any flow Chelsea are trying to create at the moment.

6:49pm: Jozy Altidore and Jordi Gomez replace Rodwell and Fletcher for Sunderland.

6:42pm: Costa's temper hasn't calmed in this half and he's booked for an elbow in Wes Brown's face. He could already be off for a kick at O'Shae, and this could have been a red as well. He'll still miss the next game against Spurs over it.

6:40pm: Chelsea have built on their chances, with Willian missing an attempt and Oscar having a shot blocked. Still nothing in the net yet!

6:37pm: Chelsea still aren't breaking through Sunderland's defence despite continuing to dominate possession. Sunderland have been able to frustrate a host of teams this way during the season - whether they can hold this against the title favourites for another 40 minutes remains to be seen.

6:34pm: And we're back! It was an exciting first half at the Stadium of Light, will the second bring the goals? Stay tuned and find out!

6:17pm: And that's a wrap on the first half.

6:15pm: Costa you naughty boy! He kicks out O'Shae and is lucky to get away without any booking. it comes on the back of a rough tackle by the Sunderland man on Costa - no love lost here.

6:10pm: Chelsea have had 12 shots on goal now compared to Sunderland's 4 - 2 of the Blues' have been on target and normally that's enough to give them at least a goal. The hosts are holding out well though, for now...

6:04pm: SAVE! Ivanovic has a shot from close range and Pantilimon saves it with his legs - very good work there by the Sunderland keeper.

6:02pm: Controversy in the dugout! Gus Poyet's assistant Mauricio Taricco is sent into the stands for saying something the referee didn't like.

6:02pm: Thibaut Courtois is forced into action by Connor Wickham again and the Sunderland man might just be their best hope of a win today - he's putting in a very positive performance so far.

5:56pm: Nemanja Matic has a shot but it's blocked - Sunderland are holding their defence very well at the moment, with Cesc Fabregas having an attack stopped by Jon O'Shae earlier as well.

5:50pm: Willian hits the post for Chelsea as they counter attack - they're looking almost lethal very early on. A following corner comes to nothing for the side though as Terry fails to find anyone in the box.

5:47pm: Chelsea aren't going to have their way completely tonight, but they're still dominating possession as they hold the ball in the midfield.

5:40pm: Sunderland are edging their way back into the game and despite having only 35% of possession they have as many chances on goal as Chelsea now thanks to Connor Wickham, who has a shot but it's over the bar.

5:37pm: It's all Fabregas and Chelsea at the moment but he's unable to find a player in the final third.

5:34pm: Not a great deal to report at the moment as both teams settle into their grooves...

5:30pm: And we're off!

5:28pm: It's minutes until kick-off and it's fair to say Chelsea are overwhelming favourites against Sunderland tonight. Can the hosts cause an upset though?

4:53pm: And the games are wrapping up now, with Liverpool, United, QPR and West Ham coming out winners while Aston Villa and Burnley, and Swansea and Crystal Palace, have to settle for a draw. Stay tuned for later when Chelsea take on Sunderland in a match that could save one side from the relegation danger or increase another's lead in their title charge.

4:43pm: GOAL! Burnley equalise with Aston Villa thanks to Danny Ings. Game on!

4:42pm: GOAL! Liverpool find a goal after pushing hard in this half through Glen Johnson.

4:41pm: PENALTY - Lukas Jutkiewicz is fouled by Jores Okore in the box and Danny Ings will take the shot from the spot.

4:40pm: Down to the final 10 minutes - who can steal a winner?

4:37pm: Some team news from the Stadium of Light:

Sunderland XI: Pantilimon, Vergini, Reveillere, Brown, O'Shea (c), Larsson, Johnson, Cattermole, Rodwell, Wickham, Fletcher.

Chelsea XI: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry (c), Azpilicueta; Matic, Fabregas; Willian, Oscar, Hazard; Diego Costa

4:33pm: RED CARD - Moussa Sissoko is off for Newcastle after receiving two yellow cards, and the day gets worse for them as they go down to 10 men.

4:32pm: GOAL! QPR are in favour with a 3-2 lead over Leicester as Charlie Austin puts them ahead.

4:24pm: GOAL! Leicester find their equaliser! There's been 36 shots on goal between them and QPR today and the scoreline now reads 2-2 thanks to Jeffrey Schlupp.

4:23pm: GOAL! United are up 3-0 against Hull and Robin van Persie's goalless run is broken! Hull have certainly made it easy for them but the Red Devils look to have sealed three points now.

4:17pm: A goal looks to be coming at Liverpool and Bojan hits the post for Stoke.

4:13pm: GOAL! Aaron Cresswell puts West Ham ahead against Newcastle.

4:11pm: QPR v Leicester is turning out to be the game of the weekend! James Vardy hits the bar for the visitors as they push hard for an equaliser.

4:05pm: And we're back!

3:48pm: Half time is ringing around England (and Wales) and Manchester United and QPR are the only sides to hold leads in the Saturday afternoon fixtures so far.

3:44pm: GOAL! QPR are in front as Leroy Fer puts them ahead of Leicester.

3:41pm: GOAL! Wayne Rooney doubles United's lead against Hull and the score is now 2-0.

3:39pm: GOAL! Aston Villa go up 1-0 against Burnley thanks to Joe Cole.

3:38pm: GOAL! QPR equalise but not by their own doing, with Leicester's Wes Morgan scoring an own goal.

3:36pm: It's also pretty highlight-less over at West Ham with one shot on target for the hosts. Newcastle are yet to put in any dangerous attacks as yet.

3:34pm: If you're wondering what's happening at Anfield right now, don't bother - it's really not a lot. Neither side has had a shot on target and that's about it for now.

3:26pm: GOAL! Mile Jedinak scores for Palace from the spot and the scores are back to level.

3:24pm: PENALTY - Crystal Palace have a penalty against Swansea after Chamakh is fouled by Jonjo Shelvey .

3:17pm: GOAL! Manchester United recover quickly from news of Di Maria's injury with Chris Smalling - yes you heard right - putting them in front of Hull 1-0 with a close range shot. Goal line technology said it was in and they have a big advantage now.

3:15pm: GOAL! Swansea go up 1-0 against Crystal Palace thanks to Bony, who uses some creativity against the Crystal Palace defence to find space and have a shot on target.

3:14pm: And he's off, with Herrera on in his place. The injuries are building for United, and Louis Van Gaal will have to rethink his tactics for Hull now.

3:11pm: It's very bad news at Old Trafford as Angel Di Maria holds his hamstring - could this be an injury? He hasn't come off yet but it's looking likely...

3:04pm: GOAL! Leicester's Esteban Cambiaso is the first to score in the 3pm kick-offs and puts his side ahead of QPR 1-0.

3:00pm: And we have kick-off!

2:55pm: Now then - five minutes until kick-off with six lots of three pointers up for grabs.

2:36pm: And that's a wrap - Arsenal finish what was a game rather devoid of highlights with three points and the pressure will ease at least a little on Arsene Wenger for now. Stay tuned for all the action later on as Manchester United and Liverpool join the action.

2:33pm: Four minutes of added time - can Arsenal hold on? At the moment it could go either way...

2:26pm: West Brom's Cristian Gamboa receives a yellow card for a foul but the side are looking good right now and building up their shots on goal.

2:24pm: OOOOOHHH that was a close call!! West Brom hit the bar with Berahino's header and the scores stay 1-0 for now...

2:20pm: Olivier Giroud - who got in the mix today but was ultimately disappointing - is off for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

2:16pm: Back to the Hawthorns and Kieran Gibbs and Sébastien Pocognoli have both caused delays in the match with injury problems but both are playing on for now. West Brom hasn't offered much in the way of an equaliser yet - still no shots on target.

2:15pm: Last of the team news for the 15:00 kick offs with West Ham v Newcastle:

West Ham XI vs. Newcastle: Adrian; Jenkinson, Cresswell, Tomkins, Collins; Noble, Kouyate, Downing, Amalfitano, Jarvis; Carroll.

Newcastle XI vs West Ham: Elliot; Janmaat, Williamson, Dummett, Haidara; Sissoko, Tiote, Colback; Gouffran, Perez, Ameobi.

2:14pm: Interesting stat from Squawka on Danny Welbeck, who departed United after he failed to impress Louis Van Gaal:

Wayne Rooney (4) is the only Manchester United player to have scored more Premier League goals than Danny Welbeck (3) this season.

2:12pm: For Burnley v Aston Villa:

Burnley XI vs. Aston Villa: Heaton; Trippier, Shackell (c), Keane, Ward; Kightly, Marney, Jones, Boyd; Barnes, Ings.

Aston Villa XI vs. Burnley: Guzan; Hutton, Okore, Clark, Cissokho; Westwood, Sanchez, Cleverley, Cole; Weimann, Agbonlahor.

2:12pm: And for QPR v Leicester:

Leicester XI vs. QPR: Schmeichel; De Laet, Morgan, Wasilewski, Konchesky; Schlupp, Cambiasso, James, Mahrez; Vardy, Ulloa.

QPR XI vs. Leicester: Green; Suk-Young, Caulker, Onouha, Isla; Fer, Henry, Barton, Vargas, Kranjcar; Austin.

2:11pm: Team line-ups for Liverpool v Stoke are as follows:

Liverpool XI vs. Stoke: Mignolet; Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Toure; Lucas, Allen, Henderson; Coutinho, Sterling, Lambert.

Stoke XI vs. Liverpool: Begovic; Cameron, Shawcross, Wilson, Pieters; Nzonzi, Sidwell; Arnautovic, Bojan, Walters; Diouf.

2:09pm: Victor Anichebe replaces Youssuf Mulumbu for West Brom as they look for an equaliser.

2:08pm: For Swansea v Crystal Palace, starting line-ups are as follows:

Swansea XI vs Crystal Palace: Fabianski; Rangel, Bartley, Williams, Taylor; Ki, Shelvey, Sigurdsson, Routledge Montero; Bony.

Crystal Palace XI vs. Swansea: Speroni; Ward, Hangeland, Dann, Kelly; Bolasie, Jedinak, Ledley, Puncheon; Gayle, Chamakh.

2:06pm: While Arsenal look to hold on for the win, here's some team news from Manchester United and Hull, with Marcos Rojo starting for the hosts:

Man Utd XI vs. Hull City: De Gea; Smalling, Carrick, Rojo, Valencia; Fellaini, Mata, Di Maria, Young; Rooney, van Persie.

Hull City XI vs. Man Utd: McGregor; Chester; Davies, Dawson, Robertson; Livermore, Diame, Elmohamady, Ben Arfa; Jelavic, Brady.

2:02pm: GOAL! Danny Welbeck scores to put Arsenal in the winning position, though Foster looked to contribute to that saveable goal. Arsenal have 15 shots on goal and 5 on target and they finally make one count with the former United man heading the ball in from the centre of the box. Will this open things up a bit?

2:00pm: The shots on goal are building for West Brom to a massive... 1. They are looking more alive in front of goal than last half but it's becoming more end-to-end football as the Gunners have a shot through Per Mertesacker as well.

1:55pm: Yellow card is handed to Graham Dorrans for tugging Kieran Gibbs' shirt.

1:52pm: West Brom are looking a bit more spritely now as they attack with intent but still aren't looking dangerous in front of Martinez.

1:47pm: And we're back! And hoping for some more action in this half...

1:31pm: And that's a wrap on the first half.

1:28pm: Goal for West Brom! No it isn't as the flag goes up and it's ruled offside. It was the correct decision too as Brunt put the ball in the net after Martinez fumbled with it.

1:24pm: A comforting stat for West Brom fans via OptaJoe,

9 - Nine of Saido Berahino's last 10 competitive goals for West Bromwich Albion have come at the Hawthorns. Comforts.

1:22pm: That's seven shots now for the Gunners and possession is swinging back in their favour and very close to 50/50. Their last game against Manchester United saw them boasting 23 shots on goal to the opposition's 12 - but they lost 2-1. Can they make their shots count today?

1:18pm: Six shots on goal now for Arsenal compared to zero for West Brom but Brunt mounts a bit of an attack for the hosts which is easily collected by Martinez.

1:14pm: Sanchez and Welbeck are peppering the Arsenal goal right now but Foster is staying strong against Arsenal's attackers. He looks to be slightly frustrated with West Brom's defenders - can the Gunners take advantage of this?

1:07pm: That injury to Monreal has gotten too much and he's off, with Kieran Gibbs on in his place.

1:01pm: It hasn't been the most interesting first half so far but Arsenal look good on the counter attack. West Brom have started well and Alan Irvine will be pleased with their efforts at half time if they keep the score at 0-0.

12:57pm: Welbeck is getting in on the action now! He helps set up a shot for Santi Cazorla but it's blocked - so far West Brom are surviving Arsenal's attempts, and their domination in possession - currently at 69% - is helping this. Meanwhile Nacho Monreal looks to be in some injury trouble but he's playing on for now.

12:53pm: Make that two shots on target for Arsenal as Aaron Ramsey finds Alexis Sanchez, who fires the ball straight into the centre of goal. The Gunners are looking far more dangerous at the moment.

12:48pm: Arsenal are attacking early with Santi Cazorla putting West Brom's keeper to work within just a few minutes. It's on target too.

12:45pm: And we're off!

12:40pm: Just minutes until kick-off as the players prepare for what will be a tough game. Can Arsenal display the mental strength that has been lacking recently? Can West Brom take advantage of their lull in form? Questions to be answered in the next two hours...

12:35pm: While still sticking to his 'it's difficult to buy what we need' line, Wenger gave a hint this week of entering into the January transfer market to purchase some defensive back-up. He told reporters:

I would like to remind you that to buy football players is not to go into a supermarket and just say: 'I want to buy a right-back or a centre-back. It's to find the right quality. If you go out tomorrow, you will see that everybody looks for the same positions everywhere. It's not as simple as it looks.

"In January, it is even more difficult because players are even less available than in June or July. But we will try to be creative and have one or two good ideas.

12:30pm: Are Liverpool more desperate to turn their season around than Arsenal? The side take on Stoke later and with Brendan Rodgers also under pressure his team choices will no doubt be interesting. United are another side hoping to build on some positive results before the end of the year and they face Hull today. Later, Sunderland take on Chelsea and will be hoping for a serious upset against the title favourites.

12:25pm: Arsenal are currently eighth in the table and have won just twice in their last seven matches. It would be fair to say Arsene Wenger is under some pressure at the moment and the manager will be keen to quieten his critics with a win against West Brom today. Meanwhile, the hosts have also struggled in their last two games and a win would catapult them into contention for a top 10 place in the table.

12:20pm: Team line-ups for West Brom and Arsenal today are as follows:

West Brom XI: Foster, Wisdom, Lescott, Dawson, Pocognoli, Gardner, Mulumbu, Brunt, Dorrans, Sessegnon, Berahino.

Arsenal XI: Martinez, Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Ramsey, Welbeck, Alexis, Cazorla, Giroud.

12:15pm: Good afternoon and welcome to IBTimes UK's coverage of a huge day of Premier League action. West Brom and Arsenal kick us off with six games filling the 3pm slot, and Sunderland and Chelsea taking the late game at 5:30pm.

Manchester United 3 Hull City 0: Robin van Persie responds to Louis van Gaal's challenge with stunning goal

Follow

Robin van Persie responded to the challenge laid down by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal by ending his barren spell with a stunning goal against Hull City.

Van Gaal had claimed ahead of this game that Van Persie was low on confidence after having a ‘very bad’ game before being substituted against Arsenal last week.

But with the 31-year-old’s place under threat from Radamel Falcao and teenager James Wilson, Van Persie delivered an emphatic reminder of his quality by scoring the third goal in United’s comfortable victory against last season’s FA Cup finalists.

First-half goals from Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney had put United in control of the game by half-time, but Van Persie’s effort – a powerful left-foot strike from twenty yards – could be worth far more than three points in terms of the psychology of the player and Van Gaal’s team.

With last Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Arsenal ending United’s wait for their first away win of the season, they went into this game aiming to capitalise on the momentum generated by the success at the Emirates.

That win had taken United into the top four for the first time since the early days of David Moyes’ failed reign as manager and, with back-to-back games against Hull and Stoke City at Old Trafford this week, the opportunity to consolidate a place in the Champions League spots was clear.

Steve Bruce, taking charge of his 700th game as a manager against the club he captained to two Premier League titles, was seeking to generate a different kind of momentum having seen his team lose to Spurs and Burnley in their last two outings.

But Hull were never in the game and United were able to coast to the points, even though another injury – this time a hamstring strain suffered by Angel di Maria – took the shine off the victory.

The £59.7m British record signing had shown bursts of pace and purpose before limping out of the action on thirteen minutes clutching his right hamstring.

Di Maria’s replacement, Ander Herrera, made a positive impact, however, and proved key to United’s ability to break Hull down before half-time.

The Spaniard was celebrating his team’s opening goal within three minutes of entering the fray when referee Anthony Taylor signalled a goal for Chris Smalling on the basis of the goal decision system.

Hull ‘keeper Allan McGregor had saved Smalling’s side-foot effort, but the Scot then rolled backwards and carried the ball over the line.

Whether Smalling will ultimately be allowed to claim the goal – his first since scoring against Hull at the KC Stadium on Boxing Day last season – is debatable due to McGregor’s contribution, but nonetheless, it was a goal that United’s positive opening merited.

Such was the home side’s dominance of possession that Hull forward Nikica Jelavic barely saw the ball, never mind touch it.

And so poor was Hatem Ben Arfa’s contribution that Bruce withdrew the on-loan Newcastle winger after just 35 minutes.

United simply kept Hull penned in, with Herrera, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini all having a positive impact in midfield.

Van Persie struggled to threaten the Hull goal, but the Dutch forward did play a central role in United’s second goal with an assist for Rooney’s strike.

Ater Herrera had won an aerial battle with Robbie Brady, Van Persie laid the ball into Rooney’s path for the United captain to score from 20 yards.

Van Persie’s lay-off highlighted the Dutch forward’s all-round contribution and work ethic, but the goal that his confidence needed continued to elude him.

It almost came in spectacular style early in the second-half when he met a long ball from Michael Carrick with a diving header, reminiscent of the one he scored for Holland against Spain during the World Cup, which was well saved by McGregor.

But the former Arsenal striker was finally rewarded for his endeavour with a stunning goal to end his barren spell on 66 minutes.

Once again, Herrera made a telling contribution by intercepting a loose ball by Andrew Robertson before teeing up Van Persie.

But the finish was as though Van Persie was unleashing the frustrations of recent weeks, with his fierce left-foot strike from twenty yards leaving McGregor completely helpless.

When he replaced by Falcao moments later, Van Persie was given a standing ovation by the Old Trafford crowd.

His performance may not have merited that, but Van Persie will now hope that the goal marks a turning point towards a more prolific run in front of goal.

And but for a desperate goal line clearance by Michael Dawson in the final minute, Falcao would have joined Van Persie in scoring a morale-boosting goal.

Mourinho issues warning to Chelsea's Premier League title rivals

Jose Mourinho warns Premier League rivals they need to produce something special to stop Chelsea winning the title

Jose Mourinho has warned Chelsea’s Premier League rivals they have an almost impossible task on their hands trying to overhaul his side.

The Blues have started the season in formidable form and travel to Sunderland on Saturday looking to extend their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Their last league loss actually at the hands of the Black Cats in April, but Mourinho has full confidence in his side and claims it would take something special for his team to be dethroned.

"It would take some other clubs winning every match," he said.

"With my team, I don't believe in bad periods. I believe in a defeat. I believe that there are many, many difficult matches ahead of us, so many points to lose. I believe in that.

"But I don't believe in bad moments. The team is a good team, a solid team. The players know what they want and how to reach it."

Mourinho is so happy with Chelsea this season that he has permitted a Christmas party.

A miserly Mourinho cancelled last year's festive shindig, with then-Blues defender Ashley Cole attending Arsenal's party instead.

The Portuguese has given the go-ahead for a family party despite a hectic schedule of nine matches in a month, beginning at the Stadium of Light.

He said: "There are Christmas parties and 'Christmas parties'. This one I think the families deserve and the boys are very happy to be with their families."

The established perception is that Mourinho's teams are defensive, but the current Chelsea side are apparently breaking the mould.

Mourinho insists he merely works with the players at his disposal.

He said: "I'm not a philosopher. I'm not somebody who sells smoke. I try to be objective, I try to be a coach, which is what I am.

"Lots of people (sell smoke). Not just managers. Lots of people in the world: politicians. They are experts.

"In this moment in my country we have the former prime minister (Jose Socrates) in jail. Imagine how much smoke he sold."

Mourinho does not expect perceptions of his teams to alter.

"At Real Madrid we scored 126 goals and we were a defensive team, so I don't think I have a chance to change the perception," he added.

"Every ingredient has a space when you are cooking a team. You need a bit of flair, yes. But you cannot lose the work-rate, the objectivity.

"You have to be defensively solid and strategic in some matches. In some matches, the percentage of strategy has to be higher than the other ingredients.

"At this moment I have a group of players who have these natural qualities, this natural talent and creativity.

"I adapt to it and I try to build a team where their qualities can flourish."

Leeds Summer Signing Adryan Will Be Integral To Club's Success, Redfearn Reveals

Adryan
Adryan is continuing to improve for Leeds.

As Leeds continue their re-building under Neil Redfearn, the new coach has revealed that summer signing Adryan is on track to become an integral member of the squad.

After clocking their first win under Redfearn before the international break against Blackpool, the club fell to a loss against Blackpool after the break in a sign of just how much work needs to be done if they are to push for a play-off spot this season.

Redfearn inherited a squad from former head coach David Hockaday which included Adryan, who signed a loan deal with the Lilly Whites from Flamengo. The Brazilian's debut for the side took longer than first expected but he has gradually improved since and Redfearn believes this will continue.

"He mixes it," he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "Particularly in the first half against Blackburn, he was instrumental in the good things we did.

"It's now just about understanding how to get him on the ball.

"In this country with a number 10 usually the opposition stick somebody in there with them but the more we work with him, the more he'll create and score himself."

As Adryan continues to ply his trade, Redfearn said that the players around him would contribute to his rise in a club looking to be seriously counted for possible promotion again.

"He's more aware of where to go and where to receive the ball now," he explained. "We need to get him in between the lines and shake him free.

"That's down to other people's movement. We've got to let him have that little bit of sugar and let him go and attack. If we do that then he'll work the rest out – how to go past people, how to link in.

"The strikers' movement when he gets free is important. If we can get Mirco and Souley down the sides of defenders then we'll be dangerous. But Adryan's done really well so far. His attitude's good and he's a driven boy."

Leeds face Derby on Saturday and will be looking to turnaround their fortunes after their recent loss to Blackburn.

Arsenal Star Santi Cazorla 'Open to La Liga Future' but Rubbishes Atletico Madrid Rumours

Cazorla
Santi Cazorla is in his third season with Arsenal (Reuters)

Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla has admitted to IBTimes UK he is open to a return to La Liga in the future – but claimed reports about a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer were rumours.

The 29-year-old Spanish international moved to the north London club in the summer of 2012 after the Gunners paid Malaga £15m to secure his services.

The Spaniard quickly became a favourite for both manager Arsene Wenger and the supporters, and last March he signed a long-term deal with Arsenal to commit his future to the club until 2017.

However with a number of players in his position, including Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez, a number of reports from Spain during the summer claimed he was considering a return to his homeland, and that Diego Simeone approached him regarding a move to Atletico Madrid.

But when questioned by IBTimes UK about that reports and whether he really is considering a future move to La Liga, Cazorla said: "There were just rumours.

"I already told it during the summer. Nobody told me anything to me. I am at Arsenal and let's see what happens in the future."

"I don't rule out [a future in La Liga]. I have played there most of my career, except during the last three seasons, and a footballer never knows what coming next. But I am open to everything."

Last season, the Spaniard reportedly left the door open to a return to La Liga if Arsenal failed to consistently challenge for trophies, and did not bolster the squad adequately.

However, the Gunners won the FA Cup last season while during the summer, Wenger spent big on a number of stars including Sanchez.

When questioned whether the former Barcelona forward was the kind of player he was asking for, Cazorla said: "Yes. We want top players.

"Alexis has joined us and he adds a lot of things to the squad. He is a top player and this are the kind of player we want at Arsenal.

"But unfortunately we are having many injuries. Alexis is playing well but we lack Mesut Ozil, Wilshere... the team are weakened by the injuries."

Igesund aims to freeze Freese

28 November 2014, 11:27

SuperSport United will look to make it “third-time lucky” in Saturday's Telkom Knockout final against defending champions Platinum Stars in Soweto.

The match will be broadcast live and will also be available via live streaming.

United have finished the competition as runners-up on two occasions, in the successive years of 2004 and 2005, but have never lifted the League Cup in any of its guises.

An appearance in the final looked highly unlikely at the start of SuperSport's season under Cavin Johnson.

United stuttered to a single victory in five games before Johnson was shown the door.

In stepped Gordon Igesund, who is attempting to lift his first trophy with his new team just three months into the demanding job.

“Regardless of who you're coaching, you want to win trophies,” Igesund said ahead of Saturday's final at Orlando Stadium.

“Winning a league championship is the ultimate. It's the toughest of all. But a cup competition gives an opportunity to everybody because it's three or four games and you're into the final.

“It's hugely important to win silverware. It makes the supporters and the club very happy. It's all about winning things and both teams have this opportunity over the weekend.”

The former national coach has steered SuperSport past Free State Stars, Wits and Orlando Pirates on the way to seven out of nine victories in all matches since taking over in September.

Matsatsantsa face a Stars outfit which have become used to being considered outsiders, despite being the current holders.

Last season, Dikwena lifted both the MTN8 and Knockout titles, both times against Orlando Pirates, when a win for Allan Freese's team was considered improbable.

Stars have already made their intentions clear this season, beating Chippa United, Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns on their way to the final.

The Rustenburg outfit faced an unbeaten Chiefs side in the second round, eliminating the run-away Amakhosi train on penalties, before ousting defending Premiership champions Sundowns, courtesy of Eleazar Rodgers' second half goal against his former employers.

“If you beat Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns on the way to reaching the final, you've done a good job,” Igesund said of Stars' strong performances.

“We have a lot of respect for Allan and his team. We know they will be very competitive and if we want to beat them, we're going to have to be at our best on the day.”

Freese will look to deploy Rodgers inside the opposition's area much the same as he did against Sundowns.

“We've been struggling a little bit to score goals,” Freese, a man of few words, said.

“I'm happy that Eleazar has been scoring a goal here and there.

“It'll be good for us to defend the trophy.”

The striker scored his first ever Premiership hat-trick last weekend for an impressive four-goal tally from his last two games, making the former Santos attacker the man to watch in the Dikwena team.

On the SuperSport side, Dove Wome poses the biggest threat going forward. The striker, currently on loan from Sundowns, has netted seven goals in 13 games for Igesund's team.

David de Gea is Manchester United's most important player right now

Follow

You could argue for hours about whether a great goalkeeper makes a great team or a great team helps a goalkeeper to become great - but if you look at the stats for David Seaman, Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar, Petr Cech and Jens Lehmann it is obvious that no team can be dominant without a world-class custodian.

The five I have mentioned are officially the Premier League’s finest, as measured by minutes-per-goals conceded. Schmeichel’s influence on Manchester United from 1991-99 was immense; Cech was the man in Jose Mourinho’s first title-winning Chelsea sides; Lehmann was in goal for Arsenal’s Invincibles; and Van der Sar was the last line of defence for Sir Alex Ferguson from 2005-2011.

Looking at the Premier League this weekend I see the best collection of keepers anywhere in Europe.

Joe Hart, Fraser Forster, David de Gea, Hugo Lloris, Thibaut Courtois, Cech and probably Tim Howard would all be on my list in a debate. Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich is the stand-out keeper in world football but the Premier League’s all-round collection cannot be matched. Hart, for example, is back on song this season - calmer, more reflective – and Lloris would be chased by a lot of the top clubs in Europe if Spurs allowed him to go.

Courtois has the talent to become the best goalkeeper in the world in the next 12 to 18 months. I believe he will go past Neuer. The player of the season so far, for me, is not Sergio Agüero but Chelsea’s new No1, who has brought a smile to my face. And not many goalkeepers make me smile.

In the Premier League, the ultimate test of physicality, it was almost a hallelujah moment to see how he dealt with crosses and set-pieces. My stance when a ball travels through the air into the box is that there has to be an excellent reason why it does not end up belonging to the keeper. Watch Courtois’ starting positions when the ball is crossed. As he steps out he has already anticipated where the crosser is aiming it and is standing there already when it arrives. It is a fantastic ability. I will always argue for catching over punching and Courtois destroys the myth that punching is always a better option.

De Gea is the player I would say Manchester United could least afford to sell. His improvement is enormous. In a Monday Night Football piece, a couple of years back, I pulled him up on his mistakes against Spurs, because I thought his errors would stop United winning the league. They had conceded 29 goals in 19 games.

I see speculation that Real Madrid want to buy him for £25m. He would be the last person I would sell, as Manchester United manager, for any amount of money. After that Spurs game people remembered the criticism but failed to recall that I also said he could go on to be one of the world’s best. He just needed to develop that physical maturity and decision making. Now, you wouldn’t sell him at any price, and Manchester United should be looking to lock him down for the next five to seven years. He is winning games for them now.

When Schmeichel left United in 1999, we still won the league for the next two years, but we never quite felt the same. For us there was an in-between period when we were without the two dominant goalkeepers of my time: Schmeichel and Van der Sar. In that hiatus we called on many decent keepers: Mark Bosnich, Fabien Barthez, Tim Howard, Roy Carroll and so on. But we were less stable as a club and a team.

Defending for us felt different. Our anxiety levels rose. The stadium atmosphere changed. We no longer had the policeman guarding the door. In that period we never felt consistently safe. So I look for a goalkeeper to be a pillar of the team, to take the pressure off you, to dominate in all situations in and around the box. With set-pieces, Peter and Edwin didn’t just concentrate on their own jobs. They manhandled you into your position as well. They made it their responsibility to know every player’s job at a set-piece because they knew a corner or free-kick was a moment of vulnerability. They performed an incredible leadership role.

When Van der Sar came in, we felt we were back in the Schmeichel mode of unquestioned dominance. In my television job I’m seen as giving keepers a hard time. De Gea, in his early years, and Simon Mignolet at Liverpool are among those I have turned the critical spotlight on, as well as Joe Hart, last season, after the mistakes he made in the Champions League.

For an explanation look no further than my own experiences of playing. A top keeper can carry a team, hold their fate in his hands. A nervy goalkeeper who flaps or skews a kick early in a game changes the whole dynamic inside a stadium, and certainly in his own team.

Although I am hard on goalkeepers, I am also respectful of the fact that it is the toughest job of the lot. It is the position that can cause the most disruption to a club. If a keeper is having a bad time then it runs right the way through the club, the fans and even the opposition fans.

I saw that in my own career. When I first came into United’s senior side the first goalkeeper I stood in front of was the Great Dane himself. Schmeichel was one of the most demanding characters ever to put boots on. He thought a mistake was if the ball went through a defender’s legs, or took a deflection off his shin. An incident that no pundit would classify as an error would be seen by Schmeichel as a defensive mistake.

He hated goals that went through a defender’s legs. And he refused to believe deflections were just bad luck. His idea was: "If there’s a shot from 25-yards, let the shot go past you. Don’t stick your leg out." I’ve been conditioned to see many deflections as products of panic, a lack of composure. Peter Schmeichel demanded that those goals were not to be tolerated. We reached the point where he was a kind of defensive coach in the penalty box.

You can bring a whole season down to points where you need your goalkeeper to save a huge one-on-one. I’m thinking for example of Demba Ba bearing down on Simon Mignolet for Chelsea against Liverpool in that vital game in April after the Steven Gerrard slip. You’ll need him to control that situation, leave no gaps for the striker to see. So often in the last four or five matches of a campaign you see those defining confrontations.

The top keeper also needs to maintain the highest concentration level when he’s not involved in the game. A good team may leave him with nothing to do for five, six minutes. Acrobatic shot-stopping isn’t what impresses me. It is making a great judgment after a period of inactivity. If Van der Sar came off having barely touched the ball he would consider it a good performance at his end. He had no ego urging him to be involved.

If you are a fan this weekend, get after the opposition goalkeeper. If you can break the other team’s goalkeeper you break their team. One dodgy kick in the first five minutes can spread anxiety. Unsettling the goalkeeper is the key to the door. Fans, you can play your part. Make his life miserable. If you crack him, you crack the lock.
