Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck's fitness will be assessed ahead of the Premier League clash with former club Manchester United, after the England international went off with a groin injury in the 3-1 win over Scotland.

Welbeck was replaced by Raheem Sterling after 66 minutes at Celtic Park and Roy Hodgson confirmed the nature of the problem in his post-match press conference.

After picking up the initial injury early in the second half, Welbeck initially attempted to play on, but  is now considered a doubt for the visit of United.

The blow leaves Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger potentially without seven first-team players for the resumption of the Premier league, in what has been another damaging international break for the Gunners.

Laurent Koscielny and Mesut Ozil both suffered knee and achilles injuries during the last round of international fixtures, while Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina, Abou Diaby and Mikel Arteta are among the other absentees for Arsenal.

With Welbeck set to miss the game, Wenger could be forced to recall Olivier Giroud ahead of schedule after the Frenchman returned to training following his broken leg.

Welbeck's five goals since his summer move have cemented his place as Arsenal's first choice striker in the absence of Giroud, but Wenger has warned the player will not walk back into his starting line-up.

"There are no indisputable players at a big club," the boss said. "There are only players that are in form who play.

"Giroud is a player who is considered as a potential starting XI player, but he is like Welbeck, he is like Sanchez. They need to be in form."
