Chelsea youngster John Swift has returned to the club after having his six-month loan spell at Rotherham United cancelled.

The 20-year-old has played for just 144 minutes across four appearances this term, the last of which came back in August in the loss to Watford.

And after making a limited impact at the New York Stadium Swift he has returned to Chelsea to seek a new loan move after being deemed surplus to requirements by manager Steve Evans.

A Rotherham statement read: "John Swift has returned to Chelsea, after his loan spell was brought to an end.

"It was agreed to be in the best interest for all parties that the player could continue his development with his parent club, after the talented midfielder was unable to make a significant impact on the first-team whilst with the Millers.

"We would like to thank John for his efforts whilst on loan with the Millers, and wish him the very best of luck in his career."

The move comes as no surprise given Swift's limit impact at Rotherham and gives Chelsea two weeks to find the youngster another club before the loan window closes on 27 November.

Reports emerged last season that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho would be taking a greater interest in the destination of players on loan after he was understood to be upset by Liverpool's treatment of Victor Moses last season.

Chelsea have 25 players out on loan, a number which is equal to the amount of players they must name in their Premier League squad every season.

Despite criticism of the Blues' loan policy, particularly given the lack of academy graduates to move into the first team, Mourinho says the strategy will produce results.

"The club is working really well on that area," he said. "Eddie Newton is hard-working and well organised. They follow the players who are on loan, the work the players are doing at every club where the players are on loan, and we wait for the right moment to bring them in to succeed here."
