Exclusive – Southampton hero warns Johnson: ‘Clyne’s coming for your England place!’

Glen Johnson may be looking over his shoulder for his place in the England squad, according to Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, who believes Nathaniel Clyne deserves a chance after impressing during the international break.

The Saints youngster was handed his senior Three Lions debut in the weekend’s 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Slovenia, and kept his place for Tuesday’s Home Nations derby win over Scotland.

Liverpool right-back Johnson, meanwhile, has struggled for form in recent months and was dropped from Roy Hodgson’s squad for the two matches.

Many have questioned the 54-cap defender’s future in the team, and, with Clyne also starring for a high-flying Southampton side which currently sit second in the Premier League table, Le Tissier has called for the 23-year-old to get the nod.

“I thought Nathaniel’s call-up was a little late in coming to be honest,” the former England international told Kick Off.

“He’s been excellent ever since he joined Southampton, and was very good for Crystal Palace before that too.

“I think he probably deserved a place in the England squad before he eventually got it, but he’s taken his chance brilliantly.

“In his first two games this week, it looked like he’d been playing international football for years.

“I think Glen Johnson might have watched the matches and thought, ‘I might have a problem getting back in the team here.’”
