Wayne Rooney has said he’d be delighted to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as England’s all-time record goalscorer.
The Three Lions captain netted twice in Tuesday’s 3-1 friendly victory over Scotland to take his tally to 46 goals, just three shy of the World Cup winner’s record.
And, having scored five goals in his last four international games to lift him up to third in the nations’ scoring charts – Rooney admitted he would be immensely proud to pass the great man’s total
"I'm just enjoying my football at the minute,” he said following the win at Celtic Park.
“I'm enjoying playing for England and I've had a good run of scoring goals.
"I hope it continues and if that means breaking the record I'll be absolutely delighted."
Roy Hodgson’s men were evidently satisfied with the victory over their rivals, but skipper Rooney insisted the occasion took second place to qualifying points.
"I think it's the least important [of the six wins since the summer’s World Cup woes], this and Norway," he told ITV.
"The qualifiers are the important games.
"This is a massive game, England and Scotland, but the aim is to qualify for Euro 2016.
"But to win is fantastic, against a Scotland side in good form. It's fantastic to play in these games, we knew it was going to be a big atmosphere.
"We expected to win the game. We're the better team and we've shown that tonight."
Jack Wilshere, who shone in his deep midfield role and produced an assist of genuine class for Arsenal team-mate Oxlade-Chamberlain’s opening goal, was equally as delighted with Auld Enemy’s victory in international football’s oldest fixture.
"We loved every minute of it," he said.
"We knew going in it would be a great occasion but fair play to us we rose to it.
"We're just delighted we got the win."
