England U21 3 - 1 Portugal U21: Local boy Ings shines at Turf Moor

England U21’s recorded an impressive victory against Portugal at Turf Moor with local boy Danny Ings netting twice in a clinical display.

It may turn out to be an important psychological boost for Gareth Southgate’s team, who face Portugal in their opening match of the European U21 Championships next summer.

England opened the scoring after six minutes when Ings, who was preferred to the in-form Harry Kane up-front, tucked home Tom Ince’s cross after good work from Nathan Redmond.

Jenkinson added the second before half-time with a composed finish from 12 yards against a Portuguese side who had won all 10 of their qualification matches ahead of next summer’s tournament.

And Portugal showed their class early in the second half with a well deserved goal when Bernardo Silva stroked the ball through the legs of England keeper Jack Butland.

But England’s two goal cushion was re-established on 58 minutes when Ings latched onto a low cross from the influential Redmond to seal a convincing win.
