Arsenal boss Wenger salutes Suarez-like star

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger heaped praise on Alexis Sanchez for rescuing the Gunners against Burnley in their 3-0 win, and likened him to Barcelona star Luis Suarez.

The north London outfit famousely tabled a £40,000,001 bid for the Uruguayan star, when it appeared he may leave Liverpool last year, but were rebuffed and instead the 27-year-old stayed at Anfield and produced an incredible season, before joining Barcelona in the last transfer window.

Wenger showed no interest in pursuing Suarez again, and his arrival at the Nou Camp actually paved the way for Sanchez to join Arsenal in a £30million move.

Since then the Chile World Cup star has excelled massively and grabbed a brace against Burnley, the opener coming on 70 minutes, when it appeared the Gunners could be heading for a frustrating draw.

"Sanchez got us out of trouble first and then it became an easy game. The header he scored is more the result of determination and desire than doing something special technically," said Wenger, who had described Sanchez as a 'street footballer' in the build-up to the match.

"He has the attributes of a fighter and of a quality, talent player. That's what you want to see in every football player."

Asked whether he expected Sanchez to adjust to Premier League football so quickly, the French manager said: "No, that would be pretentious. I like him as a player and I was ready to give him time if he needed it.

"But he’s settled in much quicker than expected. Now I play him through the middle and he has shown he can find the ball, he can dribble and he can go at you.

"There are similarities with Suarez a little bit by going at you, by being where you do not expect him to be in the box, and by having that huge desire to be at the end of things."
