Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side underestimated Anderlecht after they threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 in their Champions League clash.
The Gunners seemed to be cruising towards a win before capitulating in the final stages of the match, wasting their chance to seal automatic qualification for the last-16.
And Wenger believes his team were not mentally strong enough to see out the match – falling to a last-gasp Aleksandar Mitrovic header.
“We never felt comfortable and we got punished," said the glum Frenchman.
"The first goal was offside clearly but defensively our performance was not good enough. It was a combination of switching off and fatigue because we couldn’t win the challenges anymore.
“It is very, very disappointing but overall in the two games you get four points; we are well paid for our two performances.
“When we lost [Mikel] Arteta we lost big because he was one of the few who defended well. Maybe we underestimated, subconsciously, Anderlecht and got punished. At the Champions League you need to be at a mental level and we were not.
“Defensively across the pitch we were very, very poor tonight. We just came out of two clean sheets and maybe just thought the job was done.
“We have still got a good chance of winning the group. If we’d had lost tonight we would be in a very bad position to win the group.”
