Former Tottenham manager David Pleat has admitted Mauricio Pochettino looks like he is struggling at White Hart Lane – but backed him to get them firing by getting players into wide positions with more regularity.
Spurs have had a mixed start to the season but defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle United have left them playing catch up with the rest of the Premier League’s top four contenders.
Six goals have been scored by the Lilywhites in their last six league games, leaving their supporters exasperated as inverted wingers Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli drift in-field to support the striker, while Danny Rose and Eric Dier fail to deliver from full-back.
And Pleat believes Pochettino can get his side scoring more goals if they maximise the full width of the field and deliver more crosses into the penalty area.
He told the Weekend Sports Breakfast: “Mauricio Pochettino has a group of players he has to mould and at the moment he is struggling a little bit in terms of getting good width in the team and getting penetration from his front players. That’s something he has to juggle with and that’s a management problem.
“They started the season quite brightly with a couple of wins but, there is no question about it, in recent weeks they haven’t played with any particular momentum or impetus.
“To get a successful team you have to maximise your width, it doesn’t have to come from wingers necessarily but it has to come from somewhere. If you don’t maximise the pitch and get in high positions to deliver to front players then, quite frankly, you aren’t going to score goals.
“You have to find ways of manoeuvring chances. Strikers, if they don’t get chances, can’t score goals but if they get loads of chances they’ll put one or two in.”
