Sunderland victory ‘means more than anyone can think’ to manager Poyet

Relieved Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet admitted a 3-1 away victory over Crystal Palace “means more than anyone can think” to his luckless side.

The Black Cats claimed only their second win of the season thanks to Steven Fletcher’s brace and Jordi Gomez’s clinical finish, with the three points lifting the Wearside outfit out of the Premier League bottom-three.

An own-goal from substitute Wes Brown – the team’s fourth in three games – threatened to gift the Eagles a point, but Sunderland broke out of their shell in the final 15 minutes with two well-crafted goals.

And Poyet, whose side escaped shouts for a Palace penalty in the early stages, was thankful for his team’s turn of luck following a run of miserable results.

“The win means a lot - more than anyone can think,” said the Black Cats boss.

"The idea was to come back, somehow [from recent defeats to Southampton and Chelsea]. It's not always about playing nice - it's doing the basics.

“The best part was the goals - you don't score too many away from goals the way we did today."

Referencing the penalty appeal, Poyet said: "I didn't know if it was but, after seeing Mr [Palace manager Neil] Warnock talking to people and the information coming from the top, it was.

"It's time we maybe got a bit of luck. It was a difficult time for the referee."

On his side's own-goal problem, having added another to the three netted in last month’s incredible 8-0 loss at Southampton, Poyet added: "The players have a desire to clear, and then sometimes you are taking the biggest risk.

“Wes rushed in - I don't think we can train for this.

"I am sure the atmosphere on Wednesday [when the players train again] will be great."
