Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah ready to return to Reading next season

Nathaniel Chalobah
If Chelsea give permission, Chalobah will happily join Reading next season

Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah would jump at the chance to rejoin Reading next term.

Chalobah, 20, joined the Royals on loan until the end of the season in January after an initial loan deal with Premier League side Burnley was scrapped.

Despite Reading's disappointing league form, the England Under-21 international has enjoyed an impressive second half of the season at the Madejski Stadium, where he has made 19 appearances, scoring once.

And if Chelsea are prepared to sanction the move, Chalobah insists he would happily rejoin the Championship side for another season next term.

"I don't see why not," Chalobah told the Reading Chronicle when asked whether he would return. "It is not my place to say, my parent club is Chelsea and I have to report back to them but I have had a good time and if they wanted to send me back here then it is not something I'd turn down.

"This is a really good club, a family club. The boys have made me feel welcome from day one and it is still the same now. I've had a really good time here, I've heard the fans have said some nice things about me which I obviously appreciate."

Chalobah will make his final appearance for Reading on 2 May against Derby County.

While he remains highly regarded at Stamford Bridge, the midfielder is yet to make his competitive debut for Chelsea. His first loan spell at Watford during the 2012-13 season arguably remains his most impressive to date, but has also had spells with Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Following his return to Chelsea in January after his spell at Burnley, Chalobah was close to joining French club Bordeaux. But the club's attempts to bring him to Ligue 1 however were thwarted by French Football Federation (FFF).

Arsenal transfer news: Arsene Wenger ready to challenge Man Utd for Ilkay Gundogan

Follow

Arsenal are ready to challenge Manchester United for the signature of Ilkay Gundogan after the midfielder confirmed he will not be signing a new contract at Borussia Dortmund.

Gundogan’s current deal is due to expire in 2016, meaning Dortmund will be forced to accept bids of around £20million for the 24-year-old this summer, which comfortably falls into the budget of United and Arsenal.

United have already expressed an interest in Gundogan and have tried to sign him in the past, but Arsenal have the player on a list of midfield targets for the summer and are likely to make an enquiry after also looking at him in January.

With the emergence of Francis Coquelin as a traditional defensive midfielder who sits in front of the defence, Arsenal want a more dynamic player who can track back but also get up the pitch.

Morgan Schneiderlin, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, is one option and Southampton value the Frenchman at around £25m. Chelsea have also watched Schneiderlin and Tottenham Hotspur hold a long-term interest.

Gundogan is a player Arsenal scouts have admired for some time and would perfectly fit the role manager Arsene Wenger wants to fill, as he is both tenacious and creative.

Who has worked hardest for Arsenal this season?

The German international suffers from spondylolisthesis, a deformity in his lower back that can lead to hamstring injuries, and he was sidelined for over a year.

But since the winter break, Gundogan has eased fears over his long-term fitness by starting 16 of Dortmund’s 18 games and has produced some impressive performances.

Dortmund confirmed on their official Twitter feed on Thursday that Gundogan “has decided not to renew his contract.”

With a midfielder poised to come into the Emirates during the summer, Arsenal will allow Mathieu Flamini to leave the club and have warned club captain Mikel Arteta that he will no longer be a guaranteed starter.

Arteta has been out with calf and ankle injuries, but is due to sign a 12-month extension to his contract that is due to expire at the end of the season.

Mikel Arteta has been warned he will not be a first-team regular next season

Arsenal are happy for the Spaniard to stay, but have also told the 33-year-old he can no longer be sure of a regular first-team place and that his role will be that of an experienced squad member.

Other than trying to sign a midfielder, Arsenal are interested in Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech and are also considering their options in case Theo Walcott does not sign a new contract.

Right-back Mathieu Debuchy is set to miss Arsenal’s game against Hull City on Monday night after suffering a hamstring injury in training. The Frenchman has made only 10 League starts this season after undergoing ankle and shoulder operations.

Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen this summer

Wenger said: “Everybody is in good shape, apart from Mathieu Debuchy, who has a little hamstring problem. Monday could be too early for him.

"He got the injury in training. We don’t know how bad it is. Apart from that everybody should be available [for the Hull game].”

Arsenal ban wonderkid's mum after training ground attack

Despite Debuchy’s injury, Wenger has a strong squad to pick from for the trip to Hull and added: “We are at a period of the season where it’s going to be important to have everybody on board and to see everyone fit makes us stronger.

"We are on a good run, we want to keep it going and the fact that we have plenty of [selection] opportunities is very interesting for me.”

Did you know Telegraph Sport has an Arsenal Facebook page?

Wenger has also revealed that he used to have a “firebomb” temper, but claims to have mellowed as a manager – despite his touchline clash with Jose Mourinho this season.

The 65-year-old had had high-profile bust-ups with Alan Pardew and Martin Jol in the past, and shoved Chelsea manager Mourinho on the touchline at Stamford Bridge in October.

Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho square up at Stamford Bridge

But Wenger insists he has now calmed down and said: “I was an absolute firebomb, I was absolutely mad! You learn to express your ideas better with time, to anticipate problems better than you [used to], so you are not so surprised as when you are young.

“You take a bit more distance with what is happening. At a club like Arsenal you could not exactly behave like I behaved at the start.

'Arsenal favourite to sign Luton wonderkid'

“I have learnt to dominate my devils. I am not sure I have mellowed in my resolute attitude, but in the way I express my feelings and beliefs, certainly I have changed.”

Pearson apologises after ostrich jibe

30 April 2015, 17:11
Tweet

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson apologised on Thursday after a bizarre personal attack on a journalist during a post-match news conference following his side's Premier League defeat by Chelsea.

Pearson was angered by a question regarding criticism of his relegation-threatened squad this season and called the reporter "an ostrich" before storming out of the press conference after Wednesday's 3-1 defeat.

But speaking at a news conference on Thursday, the 51-year-old Pearson said sorry.

"Apologies," Pearson said. "They wheel us out and I was not happy about losing.

"I react. Is it pressure? It might be. It's emotion more than anything. I'm not afraid of showing my emotion.

"I also accept when I've stepped out of line so it is only right to apologise."

Pearson was asked to clarify his views on the "criticism and negativity" after Wednesday's defeat and replied: "If you don't know the answer to that question then I think you are an ostrich.

"Your head must be in the sand. Is your head in the sand? Are you flexible enough to get your head in the sand? My suspicion would be no."

Pearson has been no stranger to controversy this season and was involved in a touchline spat with a Leicester supporter during a home defeat against Liverpool in December.

Rumours also swirled in February that Pearson had been sacked after a string of poor results and a bizarre sideline tussle with Crystal Palace's James McArthur, where the Leicester boss grabbed the midfielder by the throat.

Seventeenth-placed Leicester remain deep in a relegation battle with 31 points from 34 games, one point ahead of 18th-placed Sunderland but Pearson's side have played a game more.

Leicester had won four straight Premier League matches before the visit of Chelsea and they will be hoping to return to winning ways and condemn Newcastle United to an eighth successive league defeat on Saturday.

Chelsea will not risk Diego Costa and Loic Remy fitness against Crystal Palace

Diego Costa and Loic Remy
Costa and Remy have missed Chelsea's last four games with hamstring and calf injuries

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will not risk striker Diego Costa or Loic Remy in the potentially Premier League title-clinching visit of Crystal Palace despite both players returning to training.

Costa and Remy have both missed the Blues' last four games including the 3-1 win over Leicester City which took Jose Mourinho's side to within one win of securing the club's first title for five years.

And with only three points required in Chelsea's last four games, Mourinho is unwilling to compromise the fitness of either Costa or Remy as his side charge unchallenged towards the championship.

"[Costa] has a chance, but we don't need to risk it," he said after the win at the King Power Stadium. "Diego Costa and Remy trained yesterday [Tuesday 28 April] with the team, they trained hard today without us. When you can protect, you protect."

Despite Marc Albrighton's goal on the stroke of half-time, Didier Drogba, John Terry and Ramires all netted after the break to put Chelsea on the brink of winning the league, a significant win which was reflected in the joyous celebrations which followed.

However, Mourinho – already a two-time winner of the domestic title in England – is not ready to start celebrating yet despite coming through an injury-ravaged month of April unbeaten.

"April was the month people were waiting for Chelsea to sleep, to lose a game," he explained. "It was a month with problems, without Diego Costa and Remy, with only Didier and Oscar playing as strikers.

"It was exactly the month where we were phenomenal: tactically phenomenal, the team spirit, the way we defended, the way we were clinical in our goals, the stability we showed in every game. We played five matches in April; we won everything and drew with Arsenal.

"I am so happy. I just need three points to celebrate.

"I cannot touch it. We need three points to be completely safe. We all had in our mind to try to do it at Stamford Bridge. Today the great motivation was exactly that, to win the title at Stamford Bridge.

"But Stamford Bridge can't celebrate yet. I hope the fans go there on Sunday [2 May] to play the match with us and push the team. That is the spirit we have in our camp.

"The boys are happy in the dressing room not because they won the title; they are happy because we won one more game and we are one step closer. That has to be the spirit for Sunday."

Everton defender Bryan Oviedo out for rest of the season after new injury setback

Everton defender Bryan Oviedo out for rest of the season after new injury setback

Bryan Oviedo will not play again for Everton this season after suffering a fresh injury setback

The Costa Rican defender, who has been sidelined since February due to a hamstring tear, had been closing in on a first-team return.

But he is now set for another spell in the treatment room after breaking the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during a training session.

Speaking at his Thursday morning press conference, manager Roberto Martinez said: "We had a really disappointing situation with Bryan Oviedo in training. He has fractured his fifth metatarsal, which is incredible bad luck.

“He was in a great moment of form and looking forward to getting back into the squad and finishing the season playing.

“It was a very unfortunate action on his own and he is going to be out for the rest of the season. He was trying to get on the ball and his ankle rolled in a very awkward position.”

Arsenal ban Ainsley Maitland-Niles's mother over 'assault'

Follow

Arsenal have banned the mother of one of their most promising young players from the club after she appeared to hit Arsène Wenger’s chief negotiator, Dick Law, and allegedly threatened to drag her son off the pitch during an under-21s game.

Police were called to Arsenal’s London Colney training ground last month and arrested the mother of Ainsley Maitland-Niles on suspicion of assaulting two people, although no further action was taken.

Jule Niles was accused of assault by a member of the Arsenal ground staff

A member of the Arsenal ground staff and another man accused Jule Niles of assault, but Law was also apparently struck following a meeting about the player.

Maitland-Niles this season became the second youngest player to represent Arsenal in a Champions League game, when he replaced Aaron Ramsey against Galatasaray in December, aged 17 years 102 days.

Maitland-Niles made his Arsenal debut against Galatasaray in the Champions League

Four days later, the midfielder made his Premier League debut in the 4-1 victory against Newcastle United and played as a substitute against Hull City in the FA Cup. Maitland-Niles has trained with Wenger’s first-team squad on several occasions and has represented England at Under-17 and Under-18 level.

Niles was arrested on suspicion of assault, but was released without charge. Arsenal told her that she could no longer enter the club’s London Colney training base.

Maitland-Niles came off the bench to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against Newcastle

Despite her ban, players, family members and spectators were astonished to see Niles turn up for the Arsenal Under-21 fixture against Aston Villa last Friday in which Maitland-Niles played. Witnesses claim that Niles became aggressive, shouting from the touchline and threatening to enter the pitch and drag her son out of the game.

Stewards intervened, but the police were again called and this time the mother received a warning. Arsenal lost the match 3-1.

An injury prevented Maitland-Niles being involved in the next under-21 game against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday and the incidents involving his mother have not changed Arsenal’s positive attitude towards him. Maitland-Niles is described as being a highly rated footballer and a polite and hard-working individual. He is well liked by club staff and both the youth and senior players.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire police said: “Police were called at 4.11pm on March 20 to the location to reports two people had allegedly been assaulted by a woman. They suffered superficial injuries. Officers attended and a 36-year-old woman from Watford was arrested on suspicion of assault.

“She has since been released with no further action to be taken against her. Police were called to the location on Friday, April 24 at 2.40pm to reports a woman was refusing to leave the premises. Officers attended and the woman was issued with a warning.”

Maitland-Niles has represented England at Under-17 and Under-18 level

An Arsenal spokesman said the matter was private and that the club would not be making any comment.

Law’s role at Arsenal is similar to a director of football and he has helped negotiate on some of the biggest and most successful deals in the club’s recent history. Having started work for Arsenal as a scout in South America, Law helped to take Gilberto Silva and Carlos Vela to the club before formalising his present role in 2009.

Law has since negotiated with Real Madrid officials over the record £42.5  million signing of Mesut Özil and dealt with Barcelona chiefs last summer to help with the signing of Alexis Sánchez. He is helping Wenger with Arsenal’s end-of-season transfer plans.

Arsenal negotiator Dick Law was allegedly hit

When contacted by Telegraph Sport in an effort to put the allegations to Niles, the spokesman for Maitland-Niles refused to comment.

After making his Champions League debut this season, Maitland-Niles said: “I’m just really happy and I want to thank my family and God mostly for putting me here, and Arsenal for giving me the chance. I was a bit nervous at first, but it brought a smile to my face.”

Along with Gedion Zelalem and Stefan O’Connor, the performance of Maitland-Niles against Galatasaray drew praise from Ramsey who said: “We came here with a few players making their first-team debuts and they did great. It was really nice to see some of the 17-year-olds making their debuts and I was really pleased for them. This club is all about promoting younger players with talent.”

Gary Lineker has complained previously about parental behaviour by saying: “The competitive nature of most mums and dads is astounding,” the former England striker said. “The fear they instill in our promising but sensitive [youngsters] is utterly depressing. We need a parental cultural revolution.”

Did you know Telegraph Sport has an Arsenal Facebook page?

In January last year, Helen Grant, the sports minister warned overzealous ‘touchline parents’ that they face being arrested if their support for their children at football matches gets out of control and the Football Association launched a grassroots level course to educate people about the perils of causing disturbances at matches.

The FA respect programme, aimed at parents and carers in all grassroots football, was designed to improve conduct on the touchline, promote positive role models and keep young people in the game.

Chelsea on brink of title after win

29 April 2015, 22:48
Tweet

Chelsea came from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 on Wednesday and move to within one win of clinching the Premier League title for the first time in five years.

Chelsea were labelled as "boring" by Arsenal fans during the 0-0 London derby on Sunday and they were below par against a Leicester side chasing a fifth successive league win to boost their chances of survival in the top flight.

Marc Albrighton fired Leicester ahead in first-half stoppage time but Didier Drogba equalised soon after the restart before late goals from John Terry and Ramires ensured Chelsea will seal the title with victory against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Chelsea have 80 points from 34 games with last season's champions Manchester City second on 67. Third-placed Arsenal also have 67 but they have played a game less.

Leicester remained 17th with 31 points from 34 games, one point ahead of 18th-placed Sunderland but Nigel Pearson's side have played a game more.

"I think maybe we are scared to win the league," Drogba told Sky Sports. "Two wins and then we get the trophy but this one was difficult. We have to give credit to Leicester.

"In the second half we came back and we wanted to make sure the game against Crystal Palace is the one that gives us the league.

"We don't get enough credit. We are top of the league, we have the most points and people find us boring."

Leicester kept things tight in the early stages but they were forced to make two quick substitutions because of injury, Matty James replacing midfielder Andy King and Ritchie De Laet coming on for defender Robert Huth.

The home side's rhythm was not disrupted, however, and left back Paul Konchesky forced Petr Cech into a smart save at his near post before Chelsea cleared their lines after a scramble in the box.

Leicester took the lead when Jamie Vardy crossed the ball into the box and Albrighton capitalised on Cesar Azpilicueta's slip to sidefoot past Cech.

But just as Leicester fans chanted "We are staying up", Chelsea equalised when Drogba swept home Branislav Ivanovic's cross in the 48th minute to level the scores.

Chelsea were being well contained by Leicester but the visitors snatched the lead in the 79th minute when Gary Cahill headed Cesc Fabregas's corner towards goal and Terry was lurking at the back post to flick the ball past Kasper Schmeichel.

If Chelsea's second was a little fortunate, their third was anything but as Brazilian midfielder Ramires fired a left-foot shot home from the edge of the box to take the London side closer to the title.

Tottenham: Harry Kane says 'hard work, patience and belief' have been key to his meteoric rise

Harry Kane
Harry Kane has scored 30 goals this campaign

Tottenham star Harry Kane says working hard, being patient and taking the opportunities given to him by manager Mauricio Pochettino have been the keys behind his sensational season.

The 21-year-old striker started the current campaign as the third striker behind Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado, playing only during the Europa League games with the fringe players, while he did not start a Premier League game until the 11th game of the season against Stoke City.

But the youngster took his opportunities to prove to Pochettino that he deserved a regular starting place in his line-up, which has arguably led to him becoming the best Spurs player of the campaign, having scored 30 goals in all competitions, including 20 in the Premier League.

England manager Roy Hodgson recently rewarded the Spurs star with his first call-up for the national team, where he scored his first goal within a matter of seconds of being on the pitch during his debut, while on 26 April he landed the PFA young player of the year award, while being also named in the Professional Footballers' Association's Premier League team of the year.

Asked during an interview with Tottenham's official website about the key of such a meteoric season, he said: "Hard work, patience, belief and when the chance came, making sure I took it. I was given the opportunity and I have really enjoyed my season so far. I took my chance and that's why we're here."

"Yes, it has been crazy, but that's part of it and when you are a footballer, you have to deal with things off the pitch as well. You get a lot more attention, more people coming up to you and it's how you deal with it that defines you as a person. Things have changed dramatically for me since the start of the season but in the right way and for the right reasons."

The striker admitted he could not even dream of scoring 30 goals for Tottenham in his first full campaign in the Premier League.

He said: "I always believed that if I got the chance, I'd be able to make an impact and do well but I managed to get on a good goalscoring run and I just rode that wave. I've grown in confidence, my game has got better and better and everything has come together, work I've been doing in the gym, work on the training pitch with the gaffer and the other players, it all seems to have worked this season.

"Again, though, it's all about how you maintain it if you can do again in the seasons ahead and that's what I'll be looking to do, to continue improving."

Leicester 1-3 Chelsea: Blues one win away from Premier League title

Leicester 1-3 Chelsea: Blues one win away from Premier League title

Chelsea could be crowned Premier League champions on Sunday after a scrappy 3-1 victory at Leicester City leaves the Blues just three points away from finally claiming the title.

It seemed a simple task for the table toppers against the struggling Foxes, but Nigel Pearson’s stubborn side clearly hadn’t read the script, as they took a 1-0 lead on the stroke of half time thanks to Marc Albrighton’s breakaway strike.

But the Blues picked up after a frustrating opening period, with Didier Drogba firing them level just three minutes after the re-start, before John Terry’s close-range finish and Ramires’ late thunderbolt put any doubts to bed.

After a ‘boring’ Chelsea held Arsenal to a tame goalless draw at the weekend, they were given a taste of their own medicine in the opening half as Jose Mourinho’s side were unable to break down the hosts’ steadfast defences.

Player of the Year Eden Hazard and Brazilian winger Willian twisted a turned but ultimately failed to find a way through, while a scuffed effort for Drogba and opening for Cesc Fabregas, where the Spaniard decided to pass rather than shoot, were the best they could muster.

Meanwhile, Leicester – who were hit with two early blows with centre-back Robert Huth and midfielder Matthew James forced off with injury – proved a real threat on the counter and almost took the lead with two quick-fire chances in an almighty goalmouth scramble.

Petr Cech, in the starting line-up over Thibaut Courtois, was at his best to deny Paul Konchesky’s shot from creeping into the bottom corner, but the flustered Blues failed to clear and Albrighton had an effort blocked on the line before it was finally hacked away.

And the Blues were punished from not learning from their mistakes as they soon conceded the game’s first goal. Piling men forward, the league leaders were left haplessly short at the back as the Foxes broke, Jamie Vardy sprinting up the field and whipping a superb cross in for Albrighton, who – helped by his marker Cesar Azpilicueta slipping to the turf – slotted home at the back post.

Imperial veteran midfielder Esteban Cambiasso masterminded the first half shut out as the Foxes, hoping to extend their winning run to five games in their quest to avoid the drop, threatened to inflict Chelsea with only their third top flight defeat of the season.

But Mourinho’s side mustered an immediate response to pull level early in the second period; Drogba finding the bottom corner with an angled, first-time finish from Branislav Ivanovic’s cross.

Just one minute later the Blues had a chance to go in front in practically the same fashion, this time clever wing play from Hazard, Willian and Fabregas setting up Drogba again, but the club hero skied his effort into the stands.

After Leicester’s more dominant first half it was now Chelsea’s turn to turn the screw, the visitors going close again through Drogba before finally going ahead on 79 minutes.

Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel did well to save Gary Cahill’s header from a corner, but he was helpless as Terry swarmed in and sliced the ball into the net on the rebound.

And three points were sealed in as many minutes later when assist king Fabregas added to his tally, laying the ball off for Ramires on the edge of the box and the Brazilian sending a rocket into the top corner.

In a contrast of fortunes, victory leaves Chelsea 13 points clear at the top, just three points away from title glory, while defeat means Leicester remain just two points above the bottom three, with four games left to save their Premier League status.

Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers confirms club will target marquee signings this summer

Brendan Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers has made it clear that he will answer the club's lack of goals ahead of next season

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he will have to bring in one or two marquee players in the summer to ensure that his team score many more goals in the next season.

The Merseyside club have had a disappointing season thus far and have struggled to replicate the form they showed in the second half of their previous campaign, which saw them lose the title to Manchester City by just a single point.

In the 2014/15 season, the Anfield club got off to a poor start, but showed some spirit in the beginning of 2015, with a 10-game unbeaten run, but eventual losses to Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League and being knocked out of the FA Cup semi-finals by Aston Villa, stunted their progress.

The Northern Irishman was holding faint hopes of qualifying for the Champions League following this weekend, which saw both the Gunners and United drop points, but their 1-0 loss to Hull City on Tuesday, 29 April, ended their hopes of a top four finish.

Liverpool have struggled for goals this season, with Daniel Sturridge unable to replicate last season's form due to recurring injuries, and summer arrivals Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have been woeful in front of goal the entire season.

This has prompted the manager to suggest that the club will look to bring in a marquee players to score goals, just like Luis Suarez did last season.

"Every season you have to look to try to improve and this is another," Rodgers said, as quoted by the Mirror.

"We can't hide away from fact we've lost over 50 goals from last season and any team is going to struggle to maintain their level with that."

"Now the challenge is even greater for us with Luis Suarez gone and Daniel Sturridge injured. The players have given their best to meet that challenge and standard, but we're not at that."

"We have to look to improve the squad again, which every big club will do. For fans and players, it's great to get those marquee players," the Reds manager confirmed.

"They're maybe the one or two we need and the owners will support that. If they're available and affordable within the model, then we will look to get them."

Meanwhile, Rodgers has defended Balotelli after yet another poor performance for the team during their loss at the KC Stadium on Tuesday night. The manager also revealed that the striker suffered a foot injury, which could leave Liverpool with just one fit senior striker for the rest of the campaign.

"Mario is doing his best. He's come off with a foot injury tonight. It's clear over the course of the season, that's the area where we are struggling," the former Swansea City manager explained.

"Every player every day they come in is working for their future," The Reds manager said.

Exclusive - Gianfranco Zola insists 'boring' Chelsea are rightful Premier League champions

Exclusive - Gianfranco Zola insists 'boring' Chelsea totally deserve to win the Premier League

Gianfranco Zola has dismissed claims Chelsea are ‘boring’ and insisted his former club fully deserve to be crowned Premier League champions.

Jose Mourinho’s side, ten points clear at the top of the table, have been criticised for a perceived negative style of play, but Zola insists the Blues should only be praised for their exploits this season.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the Stamford Bridge legend said. “There has been a lot of talk about Chelsea, and how they have played, but I believe, in the first part of the season, they played brilliant football and they totally deserve this [title].

“The last few weeks, probably the standard of football hasn’t been as good as before, but in a league like the Premier League, which is so draining, you cannot keep the same standards. Chelsea totally deserve it.”

Zola has been most impressed by Eden Hazard this season, and believes the Belgian midfielder, the PFA Player of the Year, has taken his game on to another level under Mourinho.

"He has been massive," said the former Italy international. "He totally deserves it [the PFA award].

"This year, compared to previous years, he has been more decisive. He is growing up and he is learning to use his qualities in an effective way.

"A lof of this is down to him but also to Jose, who is probably teaching him to be more effective."

Hull City vs Liverpool: Five things we learned

Follow

Would there have been any point in Liverpool qualifying for the Champions League?

It’s been unlikely for most of the season, but even if Brendan Rodgers’ side had caught Manchester United to sneak the last Champions League qualifying spot, what would be the point? The club would earn a few quid for losing a few matches, but think about the English co-efficient. This side would only cost more valuable ratings points and ensure the Premier League allocation was reduced to three.

There is no value in qualifying for a competition you are not prepared for, and certainly not good enough to participate in. As this year shows, it leads only to ritual humiliation. Maybe that's why it was gift wrapped for Louis Van Gaal with this defeat. As for evidence of a Liverpool title challenge next season… Rodgers must have been visiting the same smokehouses as Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe if he thinks this squad is up to it without a significant influx of new blood.

Liverpool fans send a message on ticket prices

In an ingenious plan to ensure seats were kept empty, Liverpool campaigners bought £10 children tickets in bulk for the Hull City away end – and then swerved the game. The impact has been broader coverage for an away fans boycott at the KC Stadium.

Bunking off: Large numbers of Liverpool fans swerved the match in protest

There is an emerging consensus greater efforts must be made to prevent rises in ticket prices, and while the clubs and Richard Scudamore are in the firing line, perhaps attention will also be drawn to the players’, the PFA and the agents who continue to take a massive cut of each TV deal. Some clubs are freezing prices next season, but unless wages and agents fees are subject to the same freeze – and transfer fees go down - for how long?

• Hull 1 Liverpool 0, match report

What kind of ‘dream’ move is this for Lambert?

It was described as a ‘dream’ transfer for Rickie Lambert last summer, but of what type? One from a David Lynch movie, perhaps? Maybe Lambert will wake up at a different club at start of next season and consider the past year a hallucination.

Trading places: Rickie Lambert (left) came on for Mario Balotelli in the second half

When he starts on the bench and Mario Balotelli imitates someone with no concept of football as a team sport, it does beg the question how poor the ex-England striker has been in training? What could Balotelli be doing to keep Lambert in reserve? The Scouser said when he signed he had not moved to Liverpool as a cheerleader. He has a point. Mascots know they’ll be needed every matchday.

• 'Theo Walcott is Anfield bound if Pedro joins Arsenal'

Can keeps reinventing positions

Emre Can is certainly the most successful of Liverpool’s summer signings last season, although the competition is not fierce. Nevertheless, it can’t go unnoticed that Can was signed as an all-action midfielder but has yet to feature regularly in the position. Instead he has played centre-half (who spends most of his time moving into midfield) or as was the case on Tuesday night a right back (who spends most of his time moving into midfield).

Can do attitude: The Germany international has played in various positions this season

With the ball, Can looks the part, but without it he is no right back, as was shown when he was regularly exposed as Hull attacked down the flank. It again brings into focus Liverpool’s transfer strategy. How about signing players to fit a system rather than players who require the system to changed on a weekly basis? Is that too radical a theory?

Did you know Telegraph Sport has a Liverpool Facebook page?

Hull have the fixture list from Hell

On paper, at least, Hull could hardly consider themselves in the clear from relegation. They’re remaining four games include Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United. They also have a potential defining meeting with Burnley. Steve Bruce must have considered Liverpool’s visit the most appealing given how limp the visitors were upfront, but there was no margin for error.

Testing time: Hull manager Steve Bruce faces a tough run-in

Their win over Crystal Palace certainly created a serene atmosphere around the KC Stadium and the lack of angst will certainly encourage Steve Bruce a couple more performances will see them to safety. The longer this game progressed, the more he would have felt it was an opportunity that could not be missed against a side devoid of attacking spark.

'MSN' lead Barcelona rout of Getafe

Barcelona's star front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar brought up a century of goals in all competitions as the Catalans moved five points clear at the top of La Liga with a 6-0 humbling of Getafe on Tuesday.

All three were on target inside 28 minutes as Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before teeing up Suarez to volley home and Neymar was left with the simple task of registering the 100th goal between the trio from Suarez's pass.

Xavi Hernandez then curled home a stunning fourth before Suarez made it 5-0 with a similar finish into the far corner and Messi rounded off the scoring in typical style on his favoured left foot early in the second-half.

Real Madrid can close the gap at the top back to two points when they host Almeria on Wednesday.

"Luckily the first shots on goal we had went in, the team played very well in the first-half and that is the most important thing," said Suarez.

"I don't know if there is a key to our success. There is total commitment among the team and the fans. We are obliged to win important things and we are entering the most important stage of the season."

Barca boss Luis Enrique had resisted the temptation to rest any of his front three despite making four changes from the side that won 2-0 at Espanyol on Saturday with one eye on next week's Champions League semifinal, first-leg against Bayern Munich.

That decision was richly rewarded in a stunning first-half display that tore the helpless visitors to shreds.

Messi put his recent yips from the penalty spot behind him as he opened the scoring by chipping the ball straight down the middle of the goal in the style made famous by Czech legend Antonin Panenka in the 1976 European Championships after Suarez had been felled by Alvaro Arroyo.

Getafe nearly drew level moments later when Claudio Bravo made a brilliant recovery save to claw Fredy Hinestroza's lob to safety to make up for his original poor positioning.

Suarez put the result beyond doubt with a sumptuous volley from Messi's inviting cross and the Uruguayan then turned provider for Neymar to bring up the century.

Moments later Xavi scored what could well be his final goal at the Camp Nou with the veteran expected to move to Qatar at the end of the season by curling the ball high into the far corner.

Xavi's flick then set up Suarez to finish in similar style to register his 21st goal of the season before the break.

Despite the upcoming date with former coach Pep Guardiola and Bayern in eight days time there was little let up from the hosts after the break.

However, the goals did dry up after Messi had curled home his 38th league goal of the campaign to move within one of Cristiano Ronaldo in the race to be La Liga's top goalscorer two minutes into the second period.

The four-time World Player of the Year came close to a seventh hat-trick of the season six minutes from time, but Vicente Guaita made a fine save to turn his free-kick to safety.

Elsewhere, David Moyes's Real Sociedad salvaged a point in the Basque derby away to Athletic Bilbao despite playing most of the second-half with 10 men.

Aritz Aduriz put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot after he had been brought down inside the area by Mike Gonzalez, who saw red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

But a wonderful finish from left-back Alberto de la Bella on his weaker right foot seven minutes later earned Sociedad a point.

At the bottom, Levante moved six points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over the doomed Cordoba thanks to David Barral's first-half winner.

Hull, meanwhile, are without the injured trio of Curtis Davies, Robert Snodgrass and Nikica Jelavic, while David Meyler will serve a suspension at the KC Stadium this evening.

Liverpool are currently seven points behind fourth placed Manchester United but could be within a point of their arch-rivals by the time Louis van Gaal's side next play.

Three points against Steve Bruce's side followed by another win at home to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday 2 May will close gap. United are not in action until 5:30pm later that evening, hosting West Bromwich Albion.

Hull meanwhile gave their hopes of surviving relegation a much needed boost with their 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday 25 April. A point against Liverpool will be enough to lift them above Aston Villa into 15th place, thanks to their superior goal difference.

Hull 1-0 Liverpool: Tigers creep towards safety while lifeless Reds blow top four hopes

Hull 1-0 Liverpool: Tigers creep towards safety while lifeless Reds blow top four hopes

Liverpool saw their slim Champions League hopes reduced to a flicker as Michael Dawson’s first half header handed relegation threatened Hull City a crucial 1-0 victory at the KC Stadium.

With top four rivals Manchester United beaten by Everton on Sunday, a win would have seen the Reds move to within four points of their rivals.

But they failed to take advantage of United’s slip, as the more determined Tigers managed to hold on to a slim win to take a big step closer to top flight survival.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had a host of chances to score in the first half but none really troubled Steve Harper in the Hull net, with Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Mario Balotelli all firing straight at the veteran goalkeeper.

The hosts proved a threat on the break and they took full advantage of Liverpool’s apparent lack of fire and concentration when a rapid surge up field resulted in a well taken goal from former Tottenham captain Dawson, the former Tottenham captain sending a thumping header past Simon Mignolet to leaves the Tigers four points clear of the drop zone.

Liverpool, meanwhile, remain in fifth and look set for Europa League football next season.

Big Match Feature: Bayern v BVB

28 April 2015, 09:57
Tweet

Jurgen Klopp faces DFB Cup holders Bayern Munich for one last time as Borussia Dortmund head coach in Tuesday's semifinal at the Allianz Arena (kick-off 20:30 CEST / 18:30 GMT). The match will be broadcast live on SS7 HD.

History

Bayern and Dortmund have contested two of the last three finals, with the former now chasing a third DFB Cup title in a row and 18th overall following their extra-time show of muscle in Berlin last May.

The Bavarians won at home and away in the Bundesliga earlier in the campaign, but lost the curtain-raising DFL Supercup 2-0.

The stakes

Freshly-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern have designs on repeating their treble-winnining feat of 2012/13. Dortmund stood in their way on all three fronts back then, but this time the DFB Cup represents BVB's only chance of silverware. The winners will face either DSC Arminia Bielefeld or VfL Wolfsburg in the final.

Bayern team news

Rafinha, Juan Bernat and Xabi Alonso are in contention after being rested at the weekend. The game is likely to come too soon for Moroccan centre-back Medhi Benatia, who only returned to training on Sunday, but Arjen Robben (r.) is expected to feature following injury. David Alaba, Franck Ribery and Holger Badstuber are all out.

Dortmund team news

Mitchell Langerak will continue in goal in the absence of Roman Weidenfeller. Ilkay Gündogan (l.) is available again after sitting out Saturday's win over Eintracht Frankfurt, and could replace Matthias Ginter. Henrikh Mkhitaryan may also have to make do with a place on the bench, with fit-again forward Marco Reus set to start.

Key player: Bayern

There aren't many in Munich that know Dortmund quite like Robert Lewandowski, save perhaps Mario Götze. The Polish forward scored the only goal of the game the last time the two sides met in the league and has since found his best form in a Bayern jersey, notching eight goals in his last ten appearances in all competitions.

Key player: Dortmund

Lewandowski's former BVB teammate Reus hasn't started a game since that 1-0 defeat to Bayern on 4 April, but he looked fresh when he stepped off the bench against Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon. Be it during his Gladbach days or more recently for Dortmund, the 25-year-old has always caused Germany's record champions problems.

What they're saying: Bayern

Guardiola (head coach): "The line-up's a secret. I'll make a decision the morning before the game. Arjen [Robben] isn't someone who warms the bench. If he's fit, he plays. He trained and everyone saw that it went well. [Javi Martinez] could also get a few minutes' playing time."

What they're saying: Dortmund

Klopp (head coach): "Anyone who wants to win the cup will have to beat Bayern. It's a massive hurdle on the way to Berlin. Bayern don't give away anything, we'll have to be switched on from the start. We want to make our own big impression on the game, not just pinpricks."

Form

Bayern needed penalties to see off Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the previous round, but put in one of their most dominant performances to date under Guardiola against FC Porto in the Uefa Champions League last Tuesday. BVB, who edged TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in extra time in the quarters, beat Frankfurt 2-0 at the weekend.

Possible line-ups:

Bayern: Neuer - Rafinha, Boateng, Dante, Juan Bernat - Xabi Alonso - Lahm, Thiago - Robben, Müller - Lewandowski

Dortmund: Langerak - Durm, Sokratis, Hummels, Schmelzer - Bender, Gündogan - Blaszczykowski, Kagawa, Reus - Aubameyang

Bournemouth are heading to the Premier League and this was how the chairman reacted

Jeff Mostyn's reaction to Bournemouth's win

Following their 3-0 win against Bolton, Bournemouth effectively sealed promotion to the Premier League.

Victory took the Cherries three points clear of third place Boro with a game to play.

And chairman Jeff Mostyn was certainly happy... (contains swearing).

However, they must avoid losing to Charlton 19-0 in their final game of the season to seal that automatic promotion spot alongside Watford.

Here's what the Addicks had to say on Twitter about the celebrations.

Hull City vs Liverpool, Premier League 2014/15: Where to watch, preview, betting odds and possible XI

Philippe Coutinho
Philippe Coutinho has been in impressive form for Liverpool

Hull City will take on Liverpool in the midweek Premier League clash at KC Stadium on 28 April.

Where to watch

Kick-off is at 7.45pm BST. Radio commentary of the game will be available on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Overview

Hull City come into this game after ending their winless streak by registering a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It was the Tigers' first win in the last six matches and Steve Bruce will be looking for a win against the Reds on Tuesday.

Hull will have to face Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in their remaining fixtures. Bruce will be hoping his side can kick start the tough set of fixtures with a victory over the Merseyside club.

Brendan Rodgers
Rodgers is under pressure to deliver in the summer after a series of uncertain signings

Meanwhile, Liverpool enter this fixture after a disappointing goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion after dominating the game. Rodgers was not impressed with his side's lack of ability to find the back of the net.

The former Swansea boss will be looking to set things right when his side take on Hull this midweek. Liverpool are fifth in the table with 58 points and are seven points behind fourth placed Manchester United. A victory in the midweek will help them reduce the gap to four points.

What managers say

Steve Bruce: "We have got four out of five at home against big teams. We know we need to get a result against one of them and the Burnley game looks huge. We're at home, we have got to try and produce a result I know we're capable of."

Brendan Rodgers: "For me, I am as hungry as I have ever been. I am ambitious to win and there is no greater place than here to win and I am still committed and motivated to do that here for sure."

Bournemouth 3-0 Bolton: Cherries win in style to all but seal Premier League promotion

Bournemouth 3-0 Bolton: Cherries win in style to all but seal Premier League promotion

Bournemouth all but secured their promotion to the Premier League after beating ten-man Bolton 3-0 to rise three points and 19 goals clear of top two rivals Middlesbrough.

The Cherries have led the second tier for most of the season and, bar a miracle from Boro in next weekend’s Championship finale, will play in the top flight next season for the first time in their 116-year history.

A thumping finish from midfielder Marc Pugh set them on course for the promised land before winger Matt Ritchie's snapshot gave them a comfortable cushion at the break.

Bolton defender Dorian Dervite saw red for a foul on Callum Wilson who then added the gloss to the most famous night in the club's history in the 79th minute to spark wild scenes on the south coast as fans flooded the pitch at the full time whistle.

Eddie Howe’s men were cut adrift at the foot of the Football League in 2009 but only a virtually impossible swing in goal difference on the final day would deny the Dorset-born manager from clinching the third promotion of his managerial career with the Cherries.

Sturridge's season may be done - Rodgers

27 April 2015, 17:38
Tweet

Daniel Sturridge could miss the rest of the Premier League season due to injury, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said on Monday.

Sturridge, 25, has been plagued by a variety of fitness problems this season and the England striker has missed Liverpool's last three matches with a hip problem that is set to see him left out of the Reds' squad for their Premier League match away to Hull on Tuesday.

"We'll see if he's going to be back this season or pre-season," Rodgers told a news conference on Monday.

"It has been difficult for Daniel," Rodgers said. "He's a good lad who wants to play and be working and helping the team. It's just been one of those seasons for him where it has been very unfortunate.

"We are going to have to monitor that day by day and see where he's at," the Northern Irishman added.

"When he's been fit he's been brilliant for the team. We need to get to get him back fit for and consistently playing. But we will see if that's going to be this season or the pre-season."

Sturridge was sidelined for five months earlier this season with thigh and calf injuries.

It's all a far cry from last term when the former Chelsea forward's 24 goals took Liverpool to within sight of their first English title since 1990 only for them to fall agonisingly short as they finished runners-up to Manchester City.

This season, Liverpool's remaining strikers have failed to fill the goal gap left by Sturridge's repeated absence and the departure of star forward Luis Suarez to Spanish giants Barcelona.

Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have all been found wanting, with Rodgers set to enter the transfer market after the end of this season in a bid to bolster his attack.

"We have already got a top-class striker in young Daniel, who is an outstanding player if we have him fit. But he also needs help as well," Rodgers said.
