George Graham might not have agreed with Arsenal crowd
Arsenal fans chant 'boring, boring Chelsea'
With around 11 minutes remaining, the chant ‘Boring, boring Chelsea’ rang around the Emirates. One man in the Arsenal stands might have been rather more appreciative of Jose Mourinho’s approach, however. Former Gunners manager George Graham built the ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ team that was famous for its defensive stability. Results came before reputation for Graham and it is very much for the same Mourinho, who started with no recognised strikers in his Chelsea team.
Jose Mourinho will not want to see Michael Oliver again soon
Oscar is cleaned out by Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina
Referee Oliver has upset Mourinho since day one of this season’s Premier League after booking Diego Costa for diving against Burnley. Oliver also took charge of the Liverpool Capital One Cup semi-final after which Costa was retrospectively banned for stamping. Costa did not play at the Emirates on Sunday, but Oliver did not award a penalty when Oscar was cleaned out by David Ospina and Cesc Fabregas was booked for a dive – despite being caught by Santi Cazorla.
John Terry deserves individual recognition
John Terry nullifies the threat of Olivier Giroud
Chelsea captain Terry may have been part of the PFA Team of the Year, but he was not among the shortlist of nominees to win the main award. That is a huge oversight by his fellow professionals. Terry has played in all 33 of Chelsea’s Premier League games this season and has been superb at the heart of the defence. The 34-year-old once again underlined his class against Arsenal at the Emirates and did not give in-form Olivier Giroud a sniff of the goal. Player of the Year awards should not be popularity contests.
Cesc Fabregas received more of the silent treatment
Cesc Fabregas gets more silent treatment than abuse
There were the obvious boos when Fabregas first touched the ball on his first return to the Emirates since leaving Arsenal. There was also a loud cheer when the midfielder was booked for diving. But, largely, the Arsenal supporters followed the lead of the club’s manager Arsene Wenger and gave their ex-captain the silent treatment. It certainly was not a cauldron of hate. Some Arsenal fans even clapped Fabregas off the pitch when he was substituted late on. As for Wenger, he did not even mention Fabregas or his return in his Arsenal programme notes.
No lucky number 13 for Wenger
Arsene Wenger's winless run against Jose Mourinho continues
Mourinho’s unbeaten run against Wenger now stretches to 13 games. Arsenal may not have lost the match, and displayed the kind of resilience they have lacked in previous seasons, but Wenger still could not get one over his biggest rival. Mourinho took his seat in the away dug-out before both sets of teams and staff had made their way on to the pitch, avoiding a pre-match meeting with Wenger. The draw just about secures the Premier League title for Chelsea, meaning Mourinho will once again feel he scored a victory over the Frenchman.
