Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he will have to bring in one or two marquee players in the summer to ensure that his team score many more goals in the next season.

The Merseyside club have had a disappointing season thus far and have struggled to replicate the form they showed in the second half of their previous campaign, which saw them lose the title to Manchester City by just a single point.

In the 2014/15 season, the Anfield club got off to a poor start, but showed some spirit in the beginning of 2015, with a 10-game unbeaten run, but eventual losses to Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League and being knocked out of the FA Cup semi-finals by Aston Villa, stunted their progress.

The Northern Irishman was holding faint hopes of qualifying for the Champions League following this weekend, which saw both the Gunners and United drop points, but their 1-0 loss to Hull City on Tuesday, 29 April, ended their hopes of a top four finish.

Liverpool have struggled for goals this season, with Daniel Sturridge unable to replicate last season's form due to recurring injuries, and summer arrivals Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have been woeful in front of goal the entire season.

This has prompted the manager to suggest that the club will look to bring in a marquee players to score goals, just like Luis Suarez did last season.

"Every season you have to look to try to improve and this is another," Rodgers said, as quoted by the Mirror.

"We can't hide away from fact we've lost over 50 goals from last season and any team is going to struggle to maintain their level with that."

"Now the challenge is even greater for us with Luis Suarez gone and Daniel Sturridge injured. The players have given their best to meet that challenge and standard, but we're not at that."

"We have to look to improve the squad again, which every big club will do. For fans and players, it's great to get those marquee players," the Reds manager confirmed.

"They're maybe the one or two we need and the owners will support that. If they're available and affordable within the model, then we will look to get them."

Meanwhile, Rodgers has defended Balotelli after yet another poor performance for the team during their loss at the KC Stadium on Tuesday night. The manager also revealed that the striker suffered a foot injury, which could leave Liverpool with just one fit senior striker for the rest of the campaign.

"Mario is doing his best. He's come off with a foot injury tonight. It's clear over the course of the season, that's the area where we are struggling," the former Swansea City manager explained.

"Every player every day they come in is working for their future," The Reds manager said.
