Moussa Sissoko has revealed he wants to leave Newcastle United and would love to sign for Arsenal as he wants to join a “bigger club”.
The France international has been heavily linked with a move to either Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain for several weeks and his agent was also touting him around last summer, but they will also irritate Newcastle.
Given Newcastle’s transfer policy is defined by a desire to buy players cheaply, school them in English football and then sell them on for a vast profit, few supporters will be confident Sissoko will be with them for much longer.
The tone of an interview given in France to Telefoot tried to be respectful towards his current employers, but having seen his French teammates Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy leave last year, Sissoko wants to follow in their footsteps.
Newcastle will only sell if their £20m valuation is met, but given Cabaye went on strike last season to try and force a move, the Magpies hierarchy will be worried hearing one of their employees talk so openly about leaving.
As is often the case, Sissoko will probably try to distance himself from the interview or claim he was misquoted, but this looks like the start of a familiar exit plan.
“The transfer market is open, so things can happen any day, but I am focused on Newcastle,” Sissoko reportedly told Telefoot. “If anything should happen, it will. I hope I’ll leave for a bigger club one day, but I don’t know when.
“England is my priority. If [Arsene] Wenger calls, I’ll have a man-to-man discussion with him and then we’ll see. Arsenal has always been the club of my heart.
“I hope I’ll improve to win the Champions League one day. I don’t want to set limits to myself. I want to go higher. That’s my goal.”
Sissoko, like Cabaye, has been Newcastle’s best player so far this season and one of the main reasons former manager Alan Pardew decided to leave the club to take charge of Crystal Palace was because he feared the midfielder would be sold and he would have take the flak for a boardroom decision.
The club’s media department have used the local press in Tyneside to deny that was the case and have even briefed that a new contract will be offered to the 25-year-old, but Sissoko’s desire to leave will win in the end.
Sissoko cost Newcastle just £1.7m two years ago when they signed him from Toulouse, a move that was assisted by the player demanding to leave the French club.
