Manchester United are considering a move in signing FC Porto defender Bruno Martins Indi in January.

The Dutch international was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the last summer transfer window. However, the centre-back snubbed a chance to play under Louis van Gaal at United and joined Porto from Feyenoord for £5.8m.

The 20-times English champions have been interested in signing Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels since a long time now and he has been a target for the former Netherlands manager in the ongoing transfer window.

However, the Germany's World Cup winning central defender has put the recent reports linking him with a move away from Dortmund to bed and has committed his future to the Bundesliga outfit.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United will make an approach for Hummels in the summer. Van Gaal has admitted that if the player who can improve the team is made available, Red Devils will sign him in the ongoing transfer window.

Martins Indi tops the Dutch manager's list as he is aware of his qualities after working under him while Van Gaal was managing Netherlands during the World Cup in Brazil. The 22-year-old is back on United's radar and any move from Premier League giants would cost them £10m.

The centre-back earlier revealed that he continues to have contact with United manager. Martins Indi said, "Spiritually, I still have contact with Van Gaal. I think about him and I think he also thinks about me."

Meanwhile, United legend Dennis Irwin believes his former club have a very good chance of winning the FA Cup this season. Van Gaal's side take on League Two outfit Cambridge United in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday evening.

"I don't see why not. We saw from the Yeovil game how tricky away matches against lower-league opposition can be, but we'll have learned lessons from that. So if we can get through on Friday, all of a sudden we're into the fifth round and we'll be starting to fancy it," Irwin told United's official website.

"It is the shortest route to winning something this year but you always need a bit of luck in the cup – you need things to go for you when you're not playing well. We have a great heritage in the cup and still have the most wins along with Arsenal so let's hope this is our year," he added.
