Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon hopes Fernando Torres can rediscover his goalscoring form after “returning home” to Atletico Madrid.
The £50million Chelsea flop signed a permanent switch to Italian giants AC Milan in December but immediately moved back to his boyhood club on loan until 2016.
He made a winning return too, starting - though not scoring - in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over fierce rivals Real in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie.
Fans flocked to the Vicente Calderon Stadium to get a glimpse of their hero, who captained the side before moving to Anfield for £26.5m in July 2007, and ex-Real chief Calderon hopes the Spain international can now reignite his career.
He told Kick Off: “I hope he can [rediscover his form], not only for Atleti but also for the national team.
“He played very well as a young player at Atletico Madrid, that’s why he was sold for Liverpool for a lot of money and he did very well during his time there also.
“But after that, it is true, he didn’t succeed, and I don’t know why.
“Different things can happen to a player when he doesn’t play with a team and other players he knows and is used to.
“So I hope that here everything can be different for Fernando.
“He is home. He’s in his own country and at his own club, he has everything to be the player he once was again, and I hope he can do it.”
