Ronald Koeman: Louis van Gaal should challenge for titles after spending £150m

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is unimpressed by Louis van Gaal's accomplishments thus far and insists that the amount of money he spent in the summer should translate to titles.

Manchester United host Southampton on Sunday in the Premier League, as two teams in the top four lock horns in a crucial league clash at Old Trafford. Koeman and Van Gaal have fallen out in the past at Barcelona and the Saints manager is on the lookout for any opportunity to get under the Dutchman's skin.

The duo have met in the Premier League in the reverse fixture at St Mary's where United came out on top by winning the fixture 2-1, owing to a splendid performance from David de Gea in goal.

Koeman will be looking to exact revenge on his former colleague and has insinuated that the former Bayern Munich manager should not be trailing the leaders by a sizeable margin, having spent more than £150m in the summer.

"They have great players so it's normal that they will fight for titles. They have to. How you can spend that money, how can you sign that kind of players, and not be fighting to win titles?" Koeman stated.

"Everything is up to Manchester United. They have a very successful coach, they have great players, they have money, they have great fans, a great stadium. It's normal that you win titles.

"We had some problems in the past. We shake hands and I hope he will do well with United. It would be special to beat him, but I lost the last time and we try to put it right this time," he added.

A loss here for the Red Devils will see them trail Southampton by two points and allow the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham to close the gap on a top four spot, should they get favourable results this weekend.
