Jewell quits West Brom after a week in coaching role

Paul Jewell has quit his coaching role at West Brom just a week after joining the Baggies.

Former Bradford, Wigan, Ipswich and Derby manager Jewell joined new manager Tony Pulis at the Hawthorns last Tuesday as a joint assistant alongside Dave Kemp, ending a two-year coaching hiatus.

But despite words of praise from Pulis upon Jewell's arrival, the 50-year-old has since had second thoughts and decided to walk away from Albion, with Gerry Francis taking his place.

Only last week Pulis said of Jewell: "He has massive experience, and when I thought about what I wanted for this post, he fitted the bill perfectly.

"I'm delighted we have got him, and I am sure the players will enjoy working with him."

Those players will now have to enjoy working with Francis instead as Pulis has recruited a man he has twice worked alongside in the past at Stoke and Crystal Palace.

Speaking to the club's website, Pulis said: "Gerry and I have worked well together at both Stoke and Crystal Palace and it was always part of my plan for him to join me at Albion.

"I value his insight and experience of the very highest levels of our game, and I'm delighted he is now on board. We have an agreement that we have employed in the past and suits us both."

Former Tottenham and QPR boss Francis, who began working with Pulis from the 7-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Gateshead, said: "I'm happy I have finalised a deal, and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

"I like the set-up. Albion have a good training ground, good facilities, but just as was the case at Stoke and Palace, it's vitally important for the club to retain Premier League status.

"There's going to be a number of teams involved in the situation.

"We've had three decent results, but there's a lot of work to do with the side and Tony is obviously looking to strengthen if he can."
