Mpumalanga Black Aces held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Wednesday night.

The opening half produced plenty of drama, numerous goalmouth action, two penalties and two goals.

It was a stop-start game with both sides being a little cagey in attack and wasting possession in the final third of the field.

The first decent chance of the game only came in the 20th minute when a solo run from Kharma Billiat saw him drive into the box, but he pulled his 16-yard shot inches wide of the post.

Ten minutes later Aces were awarded a penalty kick when Abia Nale was fouled inside the box by Ramahlwe Mphahlele.

Dino Ndlovu stepped up to take the spot-kick, but saw his effort saved by the Sundowns keeper.

In the 40th minute Sundowns were awarded a penalty when the referee adjudged S'boniso Gumede to have fouled Hlompho Kekana inside the box.

Teko Modise stepped up for the Brazilians and made no mistake from the spot.

Sundowns' lead, however, was short-lived when Onyekachi Okonkwo levelled matters for the home side with a shot from the edge of the box a minute before the break.

The second half was not nearly as entertaining as the first half with neither side able to create clear cut chances in front of goal.

Sundowns saw the lion’s share of possession, but their decision making in the final third was poor and they could not find a way through Aces' defence.

The Brazilians thought they had stolen victory in injury time when Bongani Zungu found the back of the net, but the goal was not given because the referee adjudged the Sundowns man to have fouled the goalkeeper in the process.

The game ended 1-1.
