Former Newcastle defender Olivier Bernard believes John Carver’s Newcastle roots gives the Magpies the advantage ahead of the second Tyne-Wear derby of the season at the Stadium of Light.
Both teams are in poor form and Sunderland find themselves just a point above the relegation zone, but the Black Cats are looking for their fifth straight victory over their fiercest rivals.
Sunderland winger Adam Johnson struck a last minute winner at St James’ Park just before Christmas, but Bernard feels the stand-in Magpies boss could hold the key to derby day success.
“I think Newcastle have a slight advantage as Carver is [Newcastle] through and through and will do everything he can to not lose the battle,” said the Frenchman.
“He’s born and raised in Newcastle. From a very young age you learn who to love and he’s dedicated his life to Newcastle. He’s going to be meticulous because the last thing you want is to lose to your rivals.”
The former Magpies left back, who made over 100 appearances between 2000 and 2005, has identified the midfield battle as the key on-field area that could determine who earns the bragging rights on Sunday.
The 35-year-old said: “The key battle is Moussa Sissoko against Lee Cattermole. Sissoko is so big for the club and the players around him. He shows his quality week in week out and he’s built to perform.”
The defender, who also played for Southampton and Newcastle in his career, experienced several North East derbies and believes the atmosphere is unique to any other game he has encountered.
“It’s more than just a game, it’s a passion and the fans are making sure that you fight for the shirt – it’s one game in the year you can’t miss. If you are on the pitch you have to give 100%,” said Bernard.
