Exclusive - 'If I had been Mike Williamson I would have been grabbing John Carver by the throat!' blasts Newcastle legend

Former Newcastle defender John Beresford has revealed if he had been in Mike Williamson’s shoes when Magpies manager John Carver accused him of intentionally getting sent off, he would have throttled him.

Williamson was dismissed for two bookable offences in Newcastle’s recent dismal 3-0 defeat at Leicester, leading to Carver launching a scathing attack on his centre back’s recklessness.

The 31-year-old is back in contention for Newcastle’s crunch final game of the season against West Ham in their bid to avoid relegation, and Beresford admits Carver’s accusations would not have settled well if he was the player in question.

“If I was Mike I would have been grabbing JC by the throat because I would never have that thrown at me as a player,” Beresford told Kick Off.

“Everything that could have gone wrong that day went wrong, what he said that was just emotion running high. It will be interesting to see how Mike will react.”

Newcastle face the Hammers on Sunday with their destiny in their own hands, but after a run of ten games without a win, including nine defeats, confidence is low on Tyneside.

Beresford, who still works closely with the club setup, acknowledges Carver’s reign at St James’ Park since Alan Pardew was sacked has been a 'nightmare', and believes the interim boss has struggled to adapt to his superior role.

He added: “It’s been an absolute living nightmare. It’s so difficult to step up from being a coach and then take over a big club like Newcastle.

“I think he got thrown into the deep end and he desperately wanted the job. I think the players knew he was a good coach, but when you make the step up from assistant you don’t get that initial reaction that new managers do. He has struggled with it.”

Despite Carver’s undoubted struggles in the Magpies’ hotseat, Beresford insists the Newcastle players are mostly accountable for their lowly predicament.

“There have been big mistakes from the top to the bottom but it comes down to the players – that’s the be all and end all,” Beresford said.

“They should have pride and desire to wear that black and white shirt as a group of players – they’ve had enough chances to get that win but they don’t fill me with confidence.”
