Southend came from behind to reach the League Two play-off final with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Stevenage in an exhilarating semi-final second leg at Roots Hall that went to extra time.
The Seasiders won 3-1 on the night, but it was the visitors who went ahead through substitute Tom Pett’s instinctive finish ten minutes after the break – the first goal Southend had conceded at home since November.
Ryan Leonard levelled soon after and the Seasiders were handed a gilt-edged opportunity to reach Wembley in normal time, but Barry Corr smashed a stoppage time penalty against the bar after Leonard was dubiously felled by Dean Parrett.
Stephen McLaughlin’s diving header and Michael Timlin’s brilliant solo goal killed the game off in extra time to deservedly book Southend’s place in Wembley’s showpiece final in just over a week’s time.
In the other semi-final, Wycombe made sure of their place in the final with a comfortable 5-3 aggregate victory over Plymouth after a 2-1 win at Adams Park.
After conceding two late goals in the first leg to keep the tie alive, the Chairboys’ nerves were settled early on when captain Paul Hayes acrobatically hooked in after just eight minutes.
Wycombe’s set piece potency had undone the Pilgrims in the first leg at Home Park, and they again dominated dead ball situations as centre back Alfie Mawson headed in a second just before half time.
Plymouth fuelled slim hopes of a turnaround when substitute Ryan Brunt flicked in with just under 20 minutes remaining but, unlike in the first leg, a comeback failed to materialise.
