How the top seven stand

Even Liverpool fans are appreciating that Puncheon strike, and Jason Puncheon the man, on Twitter:

Peep, peep

Well, that's put the cat amongst the pigeons. Palace have, to be honest, been on top for the majority of the match. As Liverpool learned in the FA Cup semi-final, an emotional goodbye doesn't make up for not being good enough. You'd have to hope that Liverpool can step it up another gear in the second period.

45 mins:

That's dampened the atmosphere slightly at Anfield. This is all set up for an 88th minute Gerrard winner, right?

43 mins:

Goal GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1 CRYSTAL PALACE 1 (JASON PUNCHEON)! He's had a great game so far, and he caps off his half with an excellent free-kick. Mignolet shifts slightly to the right of his net as Puncheon strikes the ball, which is a huge error, as the left-footed effort bends straight into the bottom corner. Think of the narrative Jason.

41 mins:

Emre Can chases after Bolasie. Can he catch him? Yes he can. Can he catch him? Yes he can. Can he catch him? Yes he can. Free kick, because Can scythes him down.

40 mins:

Jordon Ibe bursts down the right, and Raheem Sterling waits in the middle, but Ibe's low cross is behind him.

On another note completely, here are Gerrard's boots for the day.

38 mins:

Jordan Henderson is trying to cement himself as the first choice Steven Gerrard tribute act today. It's not going great so far, he's just volleyed a pass to no one in particular.

37 mins:

Liverpool are overplaying it slightly when they do get opportunities. They exchange a nice series of passes on the edge of the area, but Palace cut it out, and Coutinho gives away a free kick out of frustration.

35 mins:

Palace have another opportunity from a well-worked corner kick, but Lee fires the ball well over the bar.

33 mins:

Now Mignolet is forced into a save from Puncheon. The Palace winger fires it with his left, it's deflected and the Belgian stopper has to get down and push it wide.

31 mins:

Close again for Bolasie! Fed on the right, he fires high and wide. There's a goal in this game for Palace, should they choose to take it and annoy the narrative of the day.

30 mins:

Ibe is making it very difficult for Soare on the far side of the pitch, but he just about manages to mop up when Ibe reaches the byline.

27 mins:

Palace should arguably be level! The ball falls to Joe Ledley on the edge of the area after excellent work on the right by Bolasie, but Ledley can only fire over. Think of all the disappointed children Joe.

25 mins:

Goal GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1 (ADAM LALLANA) CRYSTAL PALACE 0! A loose ball is chased up by Lallana, who knocks it past the Palace defence. There's a slip in there too, for good measure. Lallana then strides towards goal with the ball, completely unchallenged, before firing home past Wayne Hennesey. Gerrard's there first to celebrate.

24 mins:

Lovren fouls Chamakh about 40 yards away from goal, but he's not happy about the decision at all. The ball is cleared but the ball falls to Jason Puncheon, who can't get a strike away.

23 mins:

Another chance for Palace isn't taken. They're on top. Who'd have thunk it?

21 mins:

Palace aren't just here to make up numbers. Jason Puncheon is the visitors' best player so far and has come up with some lovely passing around the Liverpool area, while Yannick Bolasie just saw a deflected shot bounce wide.

19 mins:

Well you wouldn't say it's been a classic so far. Gerrard's been tidy enough but neither team is threatening too much. Jordan Henderson almost stole into the Palace area a few seconds ago but Palace were able to clear for a corner, which came to nothing. In the mean time, here's that picture of the 'Rodgers In' banner we mentioned earlier...

— Squawka Football (@Squawka) May 16, 2015

15 mins:

A Gerrard free-kick is sent into the area, with Skrtel rising to meet it, but he sends it wide.

12 mins:

Gerrard was also honoured with a guard of honour [insert joke here about winning the Premier League].

10 mins:

Not exactly the high octane affair we may have anticipated. I hope Gerrard starts shooting from 50 yards soon.

8 mins:

Here's some great photos of the mosaic tributes to Gerrard.

6 mins:

There's another plane over Anfield, this one in support of Brendan Rodgers. I really hope this becomes a thing. Planes flying over grounds demanding substitutions. "Get Lambert on imo".

5 mins:

Yeah, not exactly a Gerrard classic corner kick.

4 mins:

Coutinho dribbles into the area before smacking his shot against a Palace defender for a Liverpool corner. No surprise over who'll take it.

3 mins:

Oh God. They've completely forgotten and left Glen Johnson in the tunnel with his kids.

— ILL MATIC (@CFC_Clive) May 16, 2015

2 mins:

Emre Can has an early sight of goal, but trickles his shot wide.

1 min:

Oh yeah, there's a football match to play. We're underway.

17.27

There's a guard of honour for Gerrard, and the Kop holds up a mosaic which says 'S8G' while another stand reads 'captain'.

17.26

The teams are out, but Gerrard is getting his own entrance. What is this, Monday Night Raw?

17.24

Hope Liverpool get a penalty one minute after Gerrard is subbed off at 0-0 to get a standing ovation

— Wile E Kouyaté (@tomvictor) May 16, 2015

I get the sense Twitter would like nothing more than a Steven Gerrard sending off today.

17.18

Spotted: former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is in attendance today. I'm sure he's enjoying all of the tributes to himself.

17.10

David Beckham is good and all, but what about this ultra-emotional tribute from Liverpool legend Ryan Babel?

Good Luck @LFC ! #YNWAStevie

Sky's broadcast has just begun, with a montage of top Gerrard moments. What's your favourite? Email me or send me a tweet.

David Beckham has paid his own tribute to Gerrard on Instagram. Gerrard will, of course, follow in Beckham's footsteps by moving to LA Galaxy.

Loyalty...

A nice touch from the visiting Palace manager Alan Pardew, who presents Gerrard with a bottle of champagne before kick-off. Given how he's suffered at the midfielder's hands in the past - 2006 FA Cup final and all that - he probably wants him to have a few glasses before kick-off.

It doesn't necessarily feel like a day for statistics but there are some damn fine ones attached to Gerrard. One of our favourites is this showing where he has scored his Premier League goals...

Where Gerrard scored from
How Gerrard scored Number

Outside the box 35
OPTA

Some beauties among those, of course. Tell us your favourites...

16.40

Another strange turn of events. Mario Balotelli has written a letter - with his own hand, no less - to Gerrard...

Here's Project Babb's take on it

16.37

Of course, nobody is disputing Gerrard's monumental significance for Liverpool FC, but where does he stand in the Premier League's all-time greats? Thankfully, we've done a list so the debate is settled once and for all... Read it right here

16.34

Here's Palace's team: Hennessey; Ward, Dann, Kelly, Souare; McArthur, Ledley, Puncheon; Lee, Bolasie; Chamakh.

16.33

Only joking. Here's the line-up: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Coutinho, Ibe, Sterling.

16.32

Team news is in - and Gerrard has been dropped!

16.22

Lots of words have been written about Steven Gerrard this week, but few have better encapsulated his influence at Liverpool - or the legacy he has left - than this piece by Chris Bascombe

Valuable players and managers are always applauded into a stadium, but most eventually leave through the back door before you can utter the words ‘farewell letter’. It would not be inappropriate if play was halted on the 89th minute this weekend to allow Gerrard to take his seat in a Sedan chair so he could be feathered towards the players’ tunnel.

You can read the full piece here

16.15

Gerrard's arrived. Thank the lord, otherwise there would have been a lot of unhappy people here today.

Adidas have released a special boot to commemorate Gerrard's last game for Liverpool. Weirdly, the video advertising it makes no mention of his upcoming glorious career with LA Galaxy. What gives?

15.48

We've done a video about Steven Gerrard's career. It involves numbers. Remember how much you loved Maths?

15.38

Back to those mosaics... the word 'Captain' is emblazoned across the Centenary Stand. Nice of Liverpool to recognise Palace's Mile Jedinak in that way.

I'll be honest, I expect Steven Gerrard's eyeless face will haunt my dreams for many a year.

15.16

Our man Henry Winter is on his way to Anfield and has spotted some merchandise which is just begging to be discovered in a dusty cupboard in 20 years' time...

Author John Green, who wrote the book The Fault in Our Stars, is paying tribute to Gerrard today today by wearing a signed shirt of his.

I'm gonna wear my signed Steven Gerrard jersey one last time for his last game at Anfield today. Sad day for me.

Just throwing it out there, this is more evidence that Steven Gerrard was once a child.

14.40

Liverpool have pulled out all the stops for today's game, including arranging a fan mosaic. The slogan of choice? Steven Gerrard, the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.

Is...is he Bret 'The Hitman' Hart?

Steven Gerrard is old now, but he was once young. This is evidence of that.

14.15

Forgetting Gerrard for a moment here, which is something that won't happen that much this afternoon - we're about 45 minutes away from kick-off as Spurs take on Hull City. Liverpool can essentially confirm Europa League football if Spurs fail to win and they get three points. Oooh, the Europa League. Prague on a Thursday.

I'm Amitai Winehouse, and I'll be doing this here live blog. Send me your thoughts via email (winehouse8@gmail.com), via Twitter (@awinehouse1) and via carrier pigeon (they'll find me).

13.30

So, the big day is finally here: Steven Gerrard's 17-year Liverpool is drawing to a close, with today representing the last time he will ever play at Anfield (until that Jordon Ibe testimonial in 2025, presumably). An emotional afternoon beckons, but before kick-off at 5.30pm, Amitai Winehouse will bring you up to date with all the build-up on Merseyside as the great and good pay homage to one of the Premier League's best ever players.
