Gambia will become the 87th different opponent that South Africa have faced since a return to world competition in 1992 as the country seeks to close in on scoring 400 goals.
The meeting at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday will be the first against the Scorpions. South Africa will have now played 42 of the 54 African countries, and will add Mauritania to that number in September when they play their second Group M game in the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers.
South Africa’s second group game in the 2017 qualifiers is away in Nouakchott on September 6.
That would leave just the Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Guinea Bissau, Libya, Rwanda, Sao Tome e Principe, Somalia, South Sudan and Togo as the African countries still to play against.
Bafana have now played 325 full internationals with 140 wins, 94 draws and 91 draws. Their goal tally is 392 to 306 conceded.
Saturday’s match in Durban is the 161st home encounter. South Africa have 87 wins at home to 30 defeats with 43 draws.
South Africa are now unbeaten in their last seven home matches, going back to the 5-0 loss against Brazil at Soccer City just over a year ago.
