Gareth Southgate has told talkSPORT that he will not change the way his England team play in order to win the Under-21 European Championship.
Having lost 1-0 to Portugal in their opening game, the England Under-21s now face an uphill task in qualifying to the latter stages of the competition.
Needing a win, Southgate’s side face a Sweden side that beat a strong Italy outfit 1-0.
The former Middlesbrough boss seemed to focus more on the players’ development rather than look for a competition win for the Under-21s.
He said: “We want to win and play in a certain sort of style that is demanding of our junior international teams. It seems that several other countries are just here for the result and the style isn’t important.
“I think if we just crash the ball forward, then we’ll never know if our midfielders can handle it when they move into the senior team.
“It makes it that much difficult for us but that is the nature of the task.
“I think that’s how it should be, because if we just play to win and everything is thrown out the window then I don’t think that’s what the England Under-21 team is all about.”
