Man Utd news: Javier Hernandez hits out at Real Madrid

Follow

Javier Henandez has hit out at his treatment by Real Madrid during his loan spell at the club last season.

The Manchester United striker was sent to the Bernabeu last September by manager Louis van Gaal after he decided he would not be part of his regular first team plans.

But Hernandez's frustrations at not getting more time on the field at Old Trafford were mirrored in Madrid, where he regularly found himself on the substitues' bench as manager Carlo Ancelotti preferred Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema. He ended the season with nine goals from 33 games, most of which were from the bench.

Hernandez's highlight was the decisive goal in the Champions League quarter-final against city rivals Atletico Madrid, but it did not yield any more first team opportunities. He has now returned to United, but has issued a parting shot at Real, accusing them of making him feel "unimportant".

Javier Hernandez celebrates his goal against Atletico - a rare highlight

“The goal against Atletico was a relief because it was a difficult year with very few opportunities,” he told Spanish sports daily AS.

“It was a release. I had to warm the bench a lot. My time in Madrid was massively frustrating because I did not feel important.”

Hernandez did have more conciliatory words for Ronaldo, who he hailed as an excellent influence during his time at Real.

In a separate interview with Univision, he said: "Cristiano is a great player. There are no words to describe him. He is a clear example that hard work pays off.

"The season at Real Madrid was one full of learning. It helped me find myself again as a player."

Attention will now turn to who might sign Hernandez, who remains surplus to requirements at United.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old, while Lazio and Inter Milan are also monitoring his situation, although Hernandez himself would be keen on staying put.
