West Bromwich Albion began life under new manager Tony Pulis with a thumping 7-0 win over non-league Gateshead on Saturday to put them into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Saido Berahino scored four of their goals as West Brom led a trio of Premier League sides into the next round, while Nottingham Forest were among the bigger names to go out.
Swansea, who won 6-2 at Tranmere, and Leicester, who beat fellow Premier League side Newcastle United 1-0, joined them in round four while most of the favourites, including Chelsea and holders Arsenal, play on Sunday.
Pulis took charge of West Brom for the first time since taking over from the sacked Alan Irvine and, for 40 minutes, they were unable to break down a dogged Gateshead side.
But once Berahino had broken the deadlock three minutes before half-time, the floodgates opened and the striker added three more, while Victor Anichebe, Chris Brunt and James Morrison completed the rout.
"It was good today," Pulis said. "I got that adrenaline rush before the game and on the touchline I can't stand still.
"I'm impressed with the club, impressed by the people, and I hope we do well this season and then we can look to put things in place for the longer term.
"Gateshead put in such effort and commitment and their supporters should be very proud of their players, coaches and the manager today. The longer the game went on the better we got, but it took 15-20 minutes for us to settle down."
Bafetimbi Gomis grabbed two goals as Swansea City won 6-2 at Tranmere while Leonardo Ulloa scored the only goal as Leicester beat managerless Newcastle United 1-0, leaving them out of the competition at this stage for the third time in four seasons.
"What a difference a week and a half makes," Leicester manager Nigel Pearson said.
"It was an important result for us today, off the back of two decent results in the league.
"Our league performances have been better than the results reflect. And now we have to build upon positives, with today being such a scrappy affair. With today's result that's three good ones on the trot."
Championship side Derby scraped past non-league side Southport 1-0 thanks to an injury-time penalty from Chris Martin. Derby manager Steve McClaren was relieved to be through, but then immediately committed his future to the club, despite rumours linking him with Newcastle.
"I've dismissed that link and I'm sticking to that," he said. "We've a job to do here, it's a great club and we're challenging at the top of the Championship, aiming to get into the Premier League."
Birmingham City came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at another non-league side, Blyth Spartans, much to the relief of manager Gary Rowett.
"It was a very, very nervy first half," he said. "You know what Blyth are going to do and they were absolutely brilliant this afternoon. That is what the FA Cup is all about. You all want to play in it and they ran us very close.
"The key for us is that we had used 13 players over 10 games so we had to give them an opportunity and make changes. Don't forget that all of our players today have played in at least the Championship. That is no excuse to how we started the game.
"We didn't expect to be 2-0 down at half time and we needed to give the fans more. As soon as we got one Blyth's heads went down."
Two other Championship sides lost to League One teams as Nottingham Forest were upended 1-0 at Rochdale and Preston beat Norwich 2-0.
Championship leaders Bournemouth romped to a 5-1 win at Rotherham while Brighton, Bolton, Blackburn, Reading and Cambridge United also won.
The matches between Doncaster and Bristol, Fulham and Wolves and Millwall and Bradford will all be replayed after ending in draws.
