Dynamo Kiev 5-2 Everton (6-4 agg): Toffees dumped out of Europa League by clinical Ukrainians

Everton were dumped out of the Europa League by a dominant Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine to end the Premier League’s representation in European competition this season.

The Toffees’ defensive shortcomings were evident throughout and a 5-2 loss on the night, including several world class goals, meant for a 6-4 defeat on aggregate for Roberto Martinez’s side.

Strikes from Andriy Yarmolenko, Lukasz Teodorczyk and Miguel Veloso either side of Romelu Lukaku’s 25 yard effort put the hosts 3-1 up at the break.

Oleg Gusev’s and Vitorino Antunes’ 40 yard screamer put the result beyond doubt and, despite Phil Jagielka’s late consolation, the Ukrainians coasted through to the quarter-finals.

The Everton defence looked uncertain right from the opening stages and they were made to pay after 21 minutes for giving Yarmolenko far too much time to curl a wonderful left-footed strike past Howard.

The Blues nearly responded immediately but Ross Barkley struck a post from a tight angle, before Lukaku drew the scores level on the night with a side-footed effort of similar quality to Yarmolenko’s.

Parity was short lived, as Everton’s flaws at the back were exposed when Teodorczyk slammed Kiev back in front from just six yards out with Jagielka and Antolin Alcaraz on their heels.

Kiev went further in front just two minutes later through Portugal international Veloso, whose deflected strike looped over Howard after more hesitant Toffees defending.

Just before the hour mark, Kiev extended their lead as Gusev added to the goal he scored in the first leg by finishing at the second attempt after Seamus Coleman had blocked his initial shot.

Barkley struck a post for the second time before left back Antunes’ stunning drive exceeded the quality of the strikes before him, beating Howard from 40 yards to put the game out of reach with Kiev’s fifth.

The visitors pulled a goal back through Jagielka’s flicked header but they couldn’t mount a comeback, leaving the Premier League without a representative in the last eight of both the Champions League and the Europa League.
