Which Manchester United youngsters could leave before the Football League loan window closes?

The emergency loan window for clubs in the Football League closes on 26 March and there is no shortage of managers on the lookout for late additions. With Manchester United's pursuit of a top-four finish rediscovering its momentum, manager Louis van Gaal is likely to have a firm idea of who will feature in his coming plans, and who will not.

United's loss can be someone else's gain, though. IBTimes UK consider the young hopefuls left at Old Trafford who could still benefit more from a temporary move away, rather than sticking it out in the club's Under-21 ranks.

Tyler Blackett

The 20-year-old was brought into the first team fold in summer 2014 by Van Gaal and suitably impressed the Dutchman, signing a new two-year deal in February.

But with just one starting appearance to his name in 2015 and Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo shaking the injuries that dogged their starts to the season, Blackett's best chance to build on the progress he has made in 2014-15 may lie elsewhere. Growing reports suggest a deal may be met in the coming days for the defender who has previously had stints at Blackpool and Birmingham City.

Nick Powell

United's forgotten man. Heavily praised by his Crewe Alexandra mentor Dario Gradi and the man who bought him to Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson, Powell's career has stalled significantly this season.

A disappointing spell at Leicester City in the first half of the season where he featured more regularly for the U21s than the first team was cancelled in January. Questions over Powell's drive and commitment would appear to have undermined his chances of securing another move but after scoring 12 goals for Wigan Athletic last term, he is proven at that level.

Tom Thorpe

For those who have watched Thorpe's progress since captaining United to FA Youth Cup success in 2011, his lack of involvement to the first team seems inexplicable. His first-team career currently amounts to two minutes of substitute appearances, despite many holding him in a higher regard than Paddy McNair and Blackett. At 22, he must now crave first-team football. Out of contract at the end of the season, a new destination could possibly awaits in the near future anyway.

Joe Rothwell

England Under-20 international Rothwell left Warren Joyce's under-21 ranks in January but, in retrospect, the destination could not have been worse. Blackpool have been embroiled in turmoil for much of the season which has shown no sign of abating.

The 20-year-old made three appearances for the club rock bottom of the Championship before the move was cancelled at the beginning of March. A move to a League One club could prove more beneficial in the closing months of the season. United need look no further to the success of Rothwell's former midfield partner Ben Pearson at Barnsley as proof of that.
