Paul Ince has defended son Tom’s decision to rule himself out of inclusion for the European Under-21 Championships this summer in favour of concentrating on his club career.
The young Hull winger, currently on loan at Championship side Derby, told Gareth Southgate on Thursday he no longer wants to be considered for England Under-21 duty, who he has represented 18 times.
His father, the former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder, has backed the controversial decision and believes it will benefit his career in the long term.
“It was a tough decision for him but I think it's the right one,” Paul Ince told Sky Sports News.
“His attitude has been spot on. But sometimes you have to be selfish in life and he's got to think about his own long-term future.“
Ince junior has had made an inconsistent start to his career, spending the majority of his time on loan at Championship sides after previously being linked with a move to Italian giants Inter Milan.
Ince senior said: “Over the last year he has been a bit stop-start. He's moved from Blackpool to Crystal Palace, to Hull, to Nottingham Forest and now Derby.
“It's important to stabilise yourself somewhere. He's been here, there and everywhere - like a nomad.”
His father believes the 23-year-old is right to focus on his club form, describing the Premier League as the “bread and butter” which will ultimately determine the extent of his development.
"He needs to think about himself and the future of his career. It's not going to be with England Under-21s or the seniors, it's going to be a club level and the next things will follow on - England is a bonus."
