Ashley Young is confident Manchester United can use their comfortable victory over top-four rivals Tottenham as a springboard for what remains of the Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils have been a shadow of their title-winning selves this term but have still managed to keep pace with the Champions League-chasing pack.
And Louis van Gaal’s side finally gave the Old Trafford faithful something to get off their seats for with a brilliant display on Sunday, as goals from Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney put Spurs to the sword in a rampant first-half.
And with fierce rivals, and another team competing for a coveted top-four spot, Liverpool their next opponents, Young believes United's return to form came at the perfect time.
“It was a great team performance,” he told talkSPORT.
“We were never really threatened by Tottenham and we want to build on that for the rest of the season.
“We want to finish in those Champions League spots, we want to finish as high in the table as possible, but we’re taking every game as it comes and now our focus will be on Liverpool next week.
“We wanted to go into that game on the back of a win and hopefully we can take the positives from the win over Spurs into the game against Liverpool.”
Young said the squad are desperate to claim a Champions League spot having missed the cut under axed boss David Moyes last term, but also insisted a club as big and as rich in heritage as Manchester United should be aiming higher.
He added: “After last year everybody is talking about getting back into the Champions League, but for a club like Manchester United, we should be up there fighting for titles, not just the Champions League.
“But we know it’s a rebuilding process and, as we’re coming down to the last few games of the season, we do want to get the club back into the Champions League, we’ve missed it this year.”
