Manchester City have been dragged into the “rat race” for a top four finish in the Premier League, according to Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman made the claim after his side moved to within two points of their city neighbours with an impressive 3-0 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, but he dismissed the Red Devils’ chances of competing for the title this season.
Chelsea moved six points clear of Manuel Pellegrini’s side with a 1-1 draw against Southampton and have one game more to play than their closest rivals.
“We have to take it step by step, it is a rat race," said Van Gaal. "We are within two points of second position, but first position in my opinion is too far away.
“Of course they [Manchester City] have been dragged in. Arsenal are only one point behind them and we are only two points behind.
“It is good for us, the fans and for the media because you can write a lot of things about it now."
