Exclusive - Marouane Fellaini behind Manchester United's resurgence, claims former Red Devil

Danny Higginbotham believes Marouane Fellaini is one of the main reasons behind Manchester United current resurgence

Danny Higginbotham believes Marouane Fellaini is one of the main reasons behind Manchester United current resurgence.

The Red Devils have started to shine towards the tail end of the season, having been criticised earlier in the campaign for some dire showings.

While performances might have been poor, the results did not match and Louis van Gaal’s side are in with the chance of landing a top two spot if they continue their fine form against Manchester City on Sunday.

Fellaini, signed by former boss David Moyes in 2013, had much of the blame for last year’s disastrous season put at his door, but has bounced back to become something of a cult hero with the Old Trafford faithful.

An impressive goal against Tottenham was followed up by a good performance against Liverpool a week later, and former Man United defender Higginbotham claims the Belgian should be praised.

“Manchester United have been a work in progress for a while,” the ex-Stoke and Southampton man told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. “The biggest change in the season is, and I never thought I say this, Marouane Fellaini.

“When you’ve got the you want to stretch the game, and Manchester United weren’t doing that earlier this season.

“They had Angel Di Maria on the right, and Ashley Young on the left, coming inside, while Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney dropped deep.

“Now they’ve got Fellaini who can stretch the game.

“It’s no surprise over the last few weeks two of their best players have been Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.

“They are getting that extra vital couple of seconds on the ball to dictate the game.”
