Europa League round-up: Sevilla batter Fiorentina, Dnipro hold Napoli

Europa League round-up: Sevilla batter Fiorentina, Napoli and Dnipro draw

Sevilla remain on course to defend their Europa League crown after a thumping 3-0 victory over Fiorentina in their semi-final first leg at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

After surviving an early scare when Mario Gomez blazed over, the home side took control and right back Aleix Vidal supplied a crisp finish to a flowing move after 17 minutes.

An unmarked Vidal struck again just after half time with a composed strike, and former PSG striker Kevin Gameiro added gloss to the scoreline with his first touch after coming on as substitute.

Unai Emery’s side will be huge favourites heading into the second leg in Italy as they aim to become the first team to retain the trophy since the La Liga side themselves did it in 2006.

In the other semi-final Napoli and Gonzalo Higuain, in particular, were made to rue a series of missed opportunities as Dnipro earned a 1-1 draw to take back to Ukraine.

The first half ended goalless but Rafael Benitez’s side opened the scoring soon after through David Lopez’s first ever goal for the club.

Higuain spurned a number of gilt-edged opportunities to extend Napoli’s lead and they were made to pay when Yevhen Seleznyov scored with his first touch with just under ten minutes remaining.
